Introduction

ISLAM is a WAY OF LIFE;

It covers all aspects of human activities from the complex issues of
governing a state to the simplest issues how we should dress.
It also include matters related to food consumptions.
Islam promotes a systematic way of life and comes with
comprehensive standards and guidelines to be adhered to by all
Muslims.
One of these standards is the concept of halal (permitted by Islamic
Shari'ah) and haram (sinful actions that is forbidden or unlawful).
Surah al-Baqarah: Ayat 29

As an example of these
standards;

We may say that if it is a proven

usaha dan) perbuatan kamu; kerana sesungguhnya Allah mengasihi
orang-orang yang berusaha memperbaiki amalannya. (AL-Baqarah: Ayat

Majah

consumption of such food is
regarded as an act of ibadah or
worship to Allah. It is the duty of
Muslims to eat good food and to

Allah.
Five Rulings in Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh)
Islamic Juresprudence (Fiqh) sets out guidelines and regulations
concerning human actions and behaviours. There are five rulings of fiqh.

Wajib (Obligatory):
An absolutely command from Allah - It is regarded as dutiful and beneficial for
the doer, and shall be rewarded by Allah.
Disobediance to it is regarded as committing a sin - also can amount to
disbelief.
Sunnah (Recommended):
Also known as mandub or mustahaab. Practicing matters that are sunnat will be
beneficial to an individual and shall be rewarded by Allah.
But omitting sunnat matters will not be considered as comitting a sin nor will it
punishable.
Mubah or Halal (Permissible):
Actions that are denoted as neither forbidden nor recommended.
In term of food and beverage, all things are permissible unless otherwise
prohibited.

Makruh (Discourage or Dislike):

Actions which are disliked and offensive; and abstainment from it is rewarding
but none the less, not haram.

Haram (Prohibited or Unlawful):

Any act that is forbidden by Allah. Denial of matters pertaining to haram amounts
to disbelief.
Haram can be divided into two categories:
1. Haram li zatihi (Prohibited by itself)
2. Haram li ghairihi (Prohibited due to others)
The Sources of Shari'ah
Al-Qur'an It is central religious text of Islam
and the most important source of
Islamic law.

It determine whether a food is

halal or haram.
kerana Allah maka sesiapa terpaksa (memakannya kerana darurat) sedang
Pengampun, lagi Maha Mengasihani.

Exercise
The Objectives of Shari'ah
(Maqasid al-Shari'ah)

Rationale?
Islam places a very strong
emphasis on cleanliness; In
performing daily prayers - Muslims
are required to complete the wuduk.

It is also extended to pure matters,

especially in the context of food and
drink. Thus, Islam has laid down
three very important guidelines:
- whether the consumption of
foodstuff is prohibited by Allah,
- whether the foodstuff is obtained
through halal or haram means, and
- whether or not the foodstuff
ingredients are harmful to health.

Islamic Principles Pertaining to Halal & Haram
Muslim scholars have developed al-Qawaid al-Fiqhiyyah (maxims of Islamic law) - a theoretical
abstraction - usually in the form of a short statement that expresses the objectives and goals of the
Islamic Shari'ah. There are FIVE (5) main principles which constitute a solid foundation for
differentiating between halal & haram.
their objectives.

Certainty shall be removed by keberkesanannya.
doubt.
3rd Principle “Al-Mashaqqah tajlibu al- Example: Harus menunaikan solat fardu dalam keadaan duduk sekiranya tidak
mampu berdiri kerana uzur yang bersangatan.

alleviation.
Harm shall be removed.
