This document defines acids and bases according to several models:
- According to Arrhenius, acids produce hydrogen ions in solution and bases produce hydroxide ions.
- Bronsted-Lowry defines acids as proton donors and bases as proton acceptors.
- Lewis acidity refers to the ability of a species to accept an electron pair, while Lewis basicity refers to the ability to donate an electron pair.
Strong acids fully ionize in water, while weak acids only partially ionize. The strength of a base depends on its affinity for protons. Conjugate bases are formed when acids lose protons.
