BBC Asian Network

What kind of music does this station play?

All of the music played on this station comes from Asian culture.

They’re all written are generally Indian/Bangladeshi.

This is usually cultured music nothing in the mainstream such as pop or rap.

This is all cultured music that you would hear at a traditional Asian event.
What programmes does the radio station have
Conventions of the radio station
Everyday there is a “big debate” where a presenter will sit down and talk about a
matter he/she thinks is wrong with today’s society, asking the audience for their
opinion as he/she puts his/hers forwards.

They also do a daily news show at 13:00 hours where they talk about the world
news for 30 minutes.

Most if not all of the presenters are of asian descent. They are primarily adults
between the ages of 20-35 years.
What genre of music does this radio station play?
This radio station generally plays traditional Asian music. It’s rare that the music
that they play is English (meaning I haven’t seen or heard any on the
website/broadcasts). The most common type of music that they play is
Bangladeshi or Deshi for short.

Most of the artists that they play are Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi or come from
that geographical area. The music rarely if at all has an English lyric and they’re
more resembling traditional Indian music.
What is the ratio of speech to music
This is the schedule for halloween as shown in a
previous slide. This is just a regular timetable but
with a halloween theme. You can see that from
06:00-10:00 hours they play music, 10:00-13:30
hours they host talk shows, debates and the news.
13:30-17:00 they host requested music followed by
the news at 17:00. For the rest of the nights
planned events there are planned talk shows these
will have some songs scattered to break it up but
you can see its predominantly talk shows.
Who is the audience? Narrowcast or broadcast.
The audience for this radio station is very much people of Asian ethnicity. This is
because of the music choice that they use and what they do as far as present the
shows. Its very clear it’s not tendered towards a white majority because of the
music and the choice of presenters.

This station is trying to reach young adults. You can see this because of the age
of the presenters which is generally pretty young and they sound enthusiastic
about what they’re discussing. Another notable giveaway is the amount of colours
used on the website.

In conclusion to this point, this is a narrowcast that is tendered towards audiences

of Asian ethnicity aged between 15-35years.
How does the content interpolate and appropriate
the audience
Having the Deshi music mixed with the English presenters means that they reach
a wider audience in the Asian community and still retain some white English
listeners this means that they are not alienating any potential audiences.

This also panders towards the Asian audience that may be listening, people who
want to keep to their cultural roots through listening to the music but don’t want to
abandon the culture that they’re in hence the English presenters.
