 Causes of Tx media Failures
• Media failures are one of the reasons for BTSs isolation in
bulk, of the order of 30
• Some of the Causes for media failures are listed below:
a)Connecting more number of BTSs in linear/ chain
b)Larger geographic spread of a ring
c)No switch over to protection mode in old Tx equipment like ITI,
Fibcom etc.
d)Card failures
e)Power Plant failures
f)No utilisation of available standby ports in BTS i.e. in 2G
both E1s & 3G both FE ports / multiple E1s
 Solutions for improving reliability
• Bringing linearly connected BTSs into ring wherever
possible
• Splitting the bigger rings into smaller ones
• Introducing CPEs at optical level into MADM rings
• Shifting of traffic from old equipment to new
• Utilisation of both E1s in 2G BTS
• Utilisation of both FEs ports in 3G BTS

To begin with high traffic and important BTSs can be

identified for protection by resorting to some of above
methods
Redundancy for GSM N/W Elements
• Protection of GSM N/W elements like
BSC, RNC, SGSN, Server, Router etc., by connecting
in two different paths.

• Auditing the N/W elements for verification of load

sharing functionality.
