The selected structural model is a 2D frame with one 2.00m span and the storey height of 5.00m. The
beams and columns have different rigidities and the mass of the structure is considered to be in the upper
right corner of the structure.
The beam has 0.6x0.6 m rectangular cross-section and the column section is of the column 0.6x0.6 m.
The critical damping ratio is considered to be ᴠ=0.05 (5%)
In order to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the structure that will be used in Matlab codes it is
necessary to carry on the modal analysis.
The structure is analyzed the EngiLab Beam-2D and SAP2000 software and the dynamic
characteristics are extracted as the program output data.

The column The beam

In node 4 we assign a mass
of 1000000 N.
As we can see the displacements of the nodes are nearly equal for the frame in both cases
of analysis.
MathCad Software
Using the software MathCad sofware we check the displacement:

Input data: b=0.6m, h=0.6m, L=2.00m, H=5.00m;

E=3*10^10 N/mm^2 (modulus of elasticity)
We can observe the value of the displacement computed with MathCad with
respect the input data, is: 1.608*10^(-11)1/L ( m/N).
The optained value is nearly equal with the value of the displacement
computed with EngiLab Beam-2D and SAP2000.
Using the value of the displacement optained in SAP2000, we
compute period of vibration(T), frequency of vibration(f) and
circular frequency(ω)
We can observe that the value for period of vibration,
frequency of vibration and circular frequency computed with
MathCad are nearly equal with the value obtained for this
elements in SAP2000.
Matlab Software
Matlab Software was used to analyze the variation in time of
several characteristics of the considered structure.
Matlab program is able to read the matrices of the FE model,
and convert them into a state-space model. Afterwards the
integrated model will provide the dynamic response of the
structure when one or more inputs of several formats are
considered.
Considering the following characteristic values of the model
Period of vibration (T) = 0.271634 [s]
Frequency of vibration (f) = 3.68142756 [Hz]
Circular frequency (ω) = 23.1310915 [rad/s]
Mass (m) = 100000 [N]
Damping ratio (ѵ) = 5(%) after 1(%)
Dampening Value :

CASE- STUDIES SOLUTIONS WITH
MATLAB(5% damping)
CASE- STUDIES SOLUTIONS WITH
MATLAB(1% damping)
 Comparing the graphs from the two cases with
different damping (5%-1%) , we can see the
behavioural difference between that the
different damping brings. The system that is
more damped will come to it’s initial state in a
shorter time period than the one that is less
damped.
