Apparatus and
Equipment

Elisha Roselle C. Labanero

BSCHE 1-2
Alcohol Lamp
A piece of laboratory equipment
used to produce an open flame.
Produces 2 inches or 5 cm tall
flame.

Analytical Balance
Measures mass to a high degree of
precision and accuracy. A class of
balance designed to measure small
mass in the sub milligram range (up
to 520 g)

Beaker
A simple container for stirring,
mixing and heating liquids. Very
poor accuracy, should be used to
estimate volume.

Beaker Tongs
Used to handle hot or
cold beakers.

Bunsen Burner
Used for heating
nonvolatile liquids and
solids.
Burette
A graduated glass tube with a tap at
one end, for dispensing variable
amount of a chemical solution and
measuring that amount at the same
time.

Crucible and Cover

Crucible is a ceramic container capable of
withstanding extreme temperatures and is
used for heating certain solids, particularly
metals, whilst the cover is designed to prevent
heat escaping from the crucible itself.

Dropper

Used to measure small amount of liquids,

usually in milligrams.

Erlenmeyer Flask

Also known as conical flask, is a widely used type of

laboratory flask which features a flat bottom, a
conical body, and a cylindrical neck. Erlenmeyer
flasks are suitable for heating liquids. The small neck
reduces evaporative losses compared to a beaker,
while the flat bottom of the conical flask makes it
unlikely to tip over and spill
Evaporating Dish
A small dish, which could be made
of either porcelain or borosilicate
glass, with a small spout. It
functions to evaporate excess
solvents in a solution to make it
more concentrated.

Florence Flask

A flask having a round body, long

neck and flat bottom, generally
used to hold liquids up to a liter (in
most flasks).

Forceps
A handheld tool used for grasping
and holding objects especially
during delicate operations.

Funnel

A pipe characterized by a wide mouth and

a narrow exit, functioning as a channel for
pouring liquids or fine-grained substances
into a container with small opening.
Graduated Cylinder
An equipment having a narrow
cylindrical shape, used to
measure the volume of liquids.

Iron Clamp

A part of iron stand comprising of

conjoined metal ring and radially-
extending rod.

Iron Ring
An equipment used to support apparatus above
work surface, for example: a wire gauze put on
the iron ring can be used to support beakers while
being heated by alcohol lamp.

Iron Stand

A laboratory equipment composing of iron

clamps and rings to elevate or support
other equipments.
Microscope
An instrument composing of
at least two lenses used to see
objects too small to be seen
by the naked eye.

Mortar and Pestle

A tool that comes in pairs which

are used to crush and grind
substances into fine powders.

Pipette
A tool used to measure and
transport liquids from and to
containers.

Platform Balance

A form of equal-arm balance having a

platform wherein objects are weighed.
Reagent Bottle
A container also known as
graduated bottle which can be
made of either glass or plastic,
having special caps intended to
contain chemicals (either in liquid or
powder form) to be stored.

Rubber Stopper
A laboratory tool used in
combination with either flasks,
test tubes or reagent bottles to
prevent the substances inside
these containers from flowing out.

Safety Goggles
A protective eyewear used to
protect the eyes and the area
surrounding it from particles or
liquids that may strike and bring
harm to the eyes.

Spatula

A small stainless steel used for scraping,

transferring or applying powders without
contamination or sticking.
Spring Balance
A balance with a hook attached to a
spring, wherein the object being
weighed is supposed to be put. The
balance uses the relation of the
applied load and the deformation of
the spring to weigh the object.

Stirring Rod
A rod made of glass which is used
to mix solutions.

Test Tube

A glassware also known as culture

tube or sample tube, having finger-
like length with an opening on top
and curved and closed bottom.

Test Tube Brush

A brush having a sturdy wire handle with a
looped end used for hanging. Bristles
surrounding the wire may be composed of
either nylon, synthetic or animal fur. Test
tube brushes are used to clean test tubes or
other laboratory glassware with narrow
openings.
Test Tube Holder
A tool used to hold a test tube in
place when it is too hot or the user
is not supposed to touch the test
tube.

Test Tube Rack

An equipment used to hold
multiple test tubes upright all at
the same time.

Thermometer
A laboratory instrument used to
measure the temperature.

Tongs

A tool used for gripping and

lifting objects without actually
coming in contact with them.
Triple Beam Balance
A weight-measuring instrument which
has the most accurate measurement,
having a reading error of +/- 0.05 gram.
Its name comes from the three beams
which carry weights that vary
differently.

Tripod
A three-legged platform made of
lightweight metal for easier portability
used to support or hold beakers or
flasks.

Volumetric Flask
A laboratory glassware, also known
as graduated flask, used for more
precise measurements of liquids.

Watch Glass
A circular, concave glass used to
evaporate liquids and for
covering beakers.

Wire Gauze
A sheet made of thin metal which are
arranged in net-like crosses. Wire
gauze is put on top of iron ring in iron
stands to support beakers or flasks
put on top of it from direct flame
coming from Bunsen burners or
alcohol lamps.
