SOLUTIONS (1ST GRADING PERIOD)

What Is A Mixture?
A mixture is made of 2 or more types of atoms that are NOT chemically
combined together and can be separated by physical means

Mixtures can take many forms:

2+ Solids 2+ Liquids 2+Gases

ANY combination of solids, liquids &gases

Types Of Mixtures
There are 2 major types of mixtures:

Heterogeneous Homogeneous Commonly known

as Solution

Means “different” Means “the same”

Which Kind of Mixture?
Classify each type of mixture as:

Solutions
A solution is a special type of mixture.

A solution is a homogeneous mixture

that combines a solute and a solvent.

A solution involves one

substance dissolving in
another substance, which
is usually a liquid.
Solutions
A solution is a special type of mixture.

A solution is a homogeneous mixture

that combines a solute and a solvent.

Solute Solvent
The solid part that The liquid part that
gets dissolved. does the dissolving.
e.g. salt, sugar e.g. water

Uniform in Appearance
(Iron and carbon)

How To Make A Solution

Solute + Solvent = Solution

Salt Water Salt Solution

Activity 1
What Solutions do You Find in Your Home?
Objectives:
1. describe the observable characteristics or
properties of common solutions found at home or
in stores; and
2. present the data gathered in table form to show
the different properties of common solutions.
PRODUCTS OR SOLUTION CHARACTERISTICS
FOUND AT HOME OR IN STORE

1. VINEGAR
2. HARD, SHINY
3. FISH SAUCE
4. NO ODOR, INVISIBLE, GAS
5. DEISEL
6. WINE
7. BITTER, LIQUID
8. ALCOHOL
9. SWEET
10. SALTY, BLACK
Naturally Occurring Solutions
1. SEAWATER
2. rainwater
3. air

What are the Properties of Solutions?

1. compare the evidence

gathered with the predictions you
made; and
2. describe the properties of
solutions based on observations.

filtration
 Filtrationis the process of separating suspended
solid matter from a liquid, by causing the latter to
pass through the pores of some substance, called a
filter. The liquid which has passed through the filter is
called the filtrate. The filter may be paper, cloth,
cotton-wool, asbestos, slag- or glass-wool, unglazed
earthenware, sand, or other porous material.
Properties of solution
1. homogeneous.
2. mixture of one phase only.
 The components are so well mixed that all parts of the
solution appear the same.
3. same composition and properties throughout.
4. The solute cannot be separated from the solvent
through filtration
 Particles are so small that they pass through the filter paper
or cheesecloth.
5. often clear and transparent.
Solubility

 is a maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a

given amount of solvent at a certain temperature.

What do we call things that are

not soluble?

Temperature Pressure

Solids increased temperature causes Solids increased pressure has no

them to be more soluble and vice versa effect on solubility
Gases increased temperature causes Gases increased pressure causes them
them to be less soluble and vice versa to be more soluble and vice versa
Ex. Iced Coffee Ex. Soda, “The Bends”
Concentration

 the
amount of solute dissolved in a solvent at a given
temperature
•described as dilute if it has
a low concentration of
solute
•described as saturated if it
has a high concentration of
solute
•described as supersaturated if
contains more dissolved solute
than normally possible
