High Performance
Concrete

Introduction

• High performance concrete is a concrete mixture, which

possess high durability high strength and high ductility when
compared to normal concrete.
• This concrete contains one or more of cementious materials
such as fly ash, Silica fume or ground granulated blast
furnace slag and usually a super plasticizer.
• HPC has ben widely used in tall building construction
High-Early-Strength Concrete

May be achieved by —
• Type III or HE high-early-strength cement
• High cement content 400
to 600 kg/m3 (675 to 1000
lb/yd3)
• Low water-cementing materials ratio (0.20
to 0.45 by mass)
• Higher freshly mixed concrete
temperature
• Higher curing temperature
High-Value Concrete
COMPOSITION OF HPC

• Low water-to-cement ratio

• Large quality of silica fumes(or other fine mineral powder)
• Small aggregates and fine sand
• High dosage of superplasticizers
• Heat treatment and application
High-Strength Concrete Materials
Aggregates —
• 9.5 - 12.5 mm (3/8 - 1/2 in.) nominal maximum size
gives optimum strength
• Combining single sizes for required grading allows for
closer control and reduced variability in concrete
• For 70 MPa and greater, the FM of the sand should be
2.8 – 3.2. (lower may give lower strengths and sticky
mixes)

High-Strength Concrete Materials

Supplementary Cementing Materials —

• Fly ash, silica fume, or slag often mandatory

• Dosage rate 5% to 20% or higher by mass of
cementing material.

High-Value Concrete
High-Strength Concrete Materials
Admixtures —
• Use of water reducers, retarders, HRWRs, or
superplasticizers — mandatory in high-
strength concrete
• Air-entraining admixtures not necessary or
desirable in protected high-strength concrete.
• Air is mandatory, where durability in a freeze-
thaw environment is required (i.e.. bridges,
piers, parking structures)
• Recent studies:
• w/cm ≥ 0.30—air required
• w/cm < 0.25—no air needed

High-Value Concrete
Comparision between microstructure of HPC
and NSC
• The Gel Porosity should be reduced with capillary pores
• In order to improve the concrete performance, three aspects are
considered
(a)The hydrated cement paste should be strengthened
(b)The porosity in concrete should be lowered
(c)The interfacial transition zone should be toughened
Performance Benefits

• ease of placement and consolidation without affecting

strength
• early high strength, excellent workability, low heat of
hydration
• volume stability
• longer life in severe environments
Advantages

• Reduced axial shortening of compression supporting

members.
• Reduction in member size resulting in increase in plinth area,
reduction in self weight, reduction in form work area,
reduction in thickness of load slab and supporting beams.
• Superior long term service performance under static,
dynamic and fatigue loading.
• Low creep and shrinkage.
• Reduced maintenance and repairs.
Limitations

• High Performance Concrete has to be manufactured and

placed much more carefully than normal concrete.
• An extended quality control is required
• In concrete plant and at delivery site, additional tests are
required. This increases the cost
• Some special constituents are required which may not be
available in the ready mix concrete plants.
High-Strength Concrete

Placing, Consolidation, and Curing

• Delays in delivery and placing
must be eliminated
• Consolidation very important to achieve
strength
• Slump generally 180 to 220 mm (7 to 9 in.)
• Little if any bleeding—fog or evaporation
retarders have to be applied immediately
after strike off to minimize plastic shrinkage
and crusting
• 7 days moist curing

Conclusion

This presentation provides an overview of the

fundamentals of high performance concrete (HPC) and its
application . The microstructure of HPC and its influence on
concrete performance is presented. The three key attributes
of HPC, strength, ductility and durability are discussed.
Advantages and limitation is also discussed.
