Agenda

•Meeting Purpose
•Review Problem-Solving Protocol
•Exercise: School Attendance
The aim is to influence school culture
to be one in which educators use
data continuously, collaboratively and
effectively to improve teaching and
learning.
Nancy Love, 2004
Examples of Norms for Data Discussions

• No judgments

• No blaming

• Focus on what data tells us about current practice

• Focus on problem solving and the future

• Focus on results for students

• Consider all possibilities

• Maintain confidentiality

Collaborative Learning Cycle Data Analysis Tool Overview
Wellman & Lipton’s “Got Data? Now What?”

Goal:
Establish a learning forum for group exploration of data that leads to
collaborative problem solving and generates actionable solutions.

Three Phases of the Tool:

1. Activate and Engage (What will the data say?)

Generate predictions & surface assumptions

2. Explore and Discover (What does the data say?)

Analyze data & develop narrative statements

3. Organizing and Integrating (What to do?)

Generating causal theory and exploring solutions
Kennedy Attendance Data

•We will use our actual attendance

data to help provide possible
solutions.

•Use sticky notes to answer the

questions. Use complete sentences
for clarity.
Step 1: Activate and Engage

•What will the data say?

•Predict but don’t solve!!!

Step 2: Explore and Discover

•Look at the actual data

•Look for trends

•What is surprising

•What pops out?

Step 3: Example
Organizing and Integrating (What to do?)
Data Point Root Cause of Problem Probable Solutions Is this
solution
feasible?

50% Example: ½ days are Eliminate ½ days for

attendance on problematic for the severe our program.
