1. Summary of Engine Room Temperature Problems & Improvement

1) High Temperature Problem in Section 10


- Problem: The engine room top area is heated by solar heat, and then, the top area is getting hot
when ship is anchored.
- Modification: DSME installed additional cooling air ducts for cooling engine room top.

2) High Temperature Problem in Section 20


- Problem: The engine room top is heated by engines until a couple of hours after shut down to
engines.
- Modification: DSME reversed ventilation concept to blow cooling air to engines top area as Cakra
and modified insulation thickness of exhaust gas line for engines from 30mm to 40
& 50mm.

Previous Ventilation Concept

1-1. 1st Improvement in Section 10

1) Previous Condition
- The outside pressure hull of engine room top in section 10 is exposed to solar when ship anchored.
- Propulsion motor fans for cooling to section 10 were stopped during ship anchored in the harbor.
-> The temperature of engine room top was over the 60℃.

2) Modification
- DSME installed additional cooling ducts for cooling to engine room top. Cooling air comes from
engine room top area and decreased to air temperature under the solar.

1-2. 2nd Improvement in Section 20 (1/2)

1) Previous Ventilation Concept


- According to previous ventilation concept, the ACU(air conditioning unit) K1 sucked heated air from
engines to engine top and blow cooling air to engine room side and bottom. Therefore heated air
collected engine room top area.
-> The temperature of engine room top is increased until a couple of hours after engine to shut down.

2) Modified Ventilation Concept


- Cooling air comes from engines top and blows to engines as KRI Cakra 401. This concept is effected to
prevent collecting the heated air to engine room top area.

3) Increase of Exhaust Gas Line Insulation Thickness


- DSME modified insulation thickness of exhaust gas line for engines from 30mm to 40mm and 50mm.
- Heat emission and surface temperature was decreased.

4. Compare Temperature Measurement Data

1) Engine Room Temperature at Hot spot (Point 6)


- The average engine room temperature is lower than 45℃.
- Highest temperature on hot spot was decreased after modification.

5. Conclusion

1) The max. average engine room temperature was about 40℃ and be satisfied engine room
temperature of 45 ℃ in the technical specification.

2) Highest temperature on hot spot (point 6) was decreased after modification.

3) After shut down diesel engine, the hot spot (point 6) temperature is over 45℃ during
1hour 30min.

4) The average engine room temperature was changed by diesel engine operation and
equipment operation.
