The principal ones are

pressure, temperature
and wind velocity, whilst
others have been
designed to measure
sunshine hours, density
of the water and rainfall.

ANEMOMETER
Instrument that measures wind
speed.

 When fitted to a vessel that is moving, the wind speed

recorded is a relative wind speed. This true wind speed is the
resultant of the relative wind speed and direction vector and
the ship's wind speed and direction vector.
 To work out the true wind speed the vector triangle must be
resolved. The working of this vector triangle is similar to the
triangles worked out in radar plotting.

HYGROMETER
Used to measure humidity using
condensation temperature

 Consists of two thermometers  In dry air the water from the

mounted side by side; one is a muslin of the wet bulb
dry bulb thermometer, the other thermometer evaporates rapidly
a wet bulb thermometer cooling the thermometer.
 One has muslin wrapped around  In high humidity conditions the
the bulb and this muslin is led to evaporation from the wet bulb
a bath of water; this is known as will be minimal and the

the air temperature.

wet and dry bulb thermometers

humidity using a set of tables.

HYDROM ETER
Used to measure the density of the water and is
one of the most important measuring instruments
on board a vessel.

ANEROID
BAROMETER
more robust and compact
instrument than the mercurial
b a r o m e t e r.
 An instrument for measuring pressure as a method that does
not involve liquid.
 Invented in 1844 by French scientist Lucien Vidi
 It uses a small, flexible metal box called an aneroid cell
(capsule), which is made from an alloy of beryllium and
copper.
 The main component is a vacuum box, which is partially
exhausted of air. An increase of atmospheric pressure
compresses this box causing the pointer on the dial (via the
lever system) to register a higher pressure. Converse occurs
with a decrease of pressure.
 It is good for situations where a general idea of the altitude or
impending weather is needed, but where a mercury
barometer would be unsafe.

BAROGRAPH
The prime purpose of the
barograph is to record the
p r e s s u r e t e n d e n c y.
 The barograph works on the same principle as the aneroid
barometer.
 A lever system connects the vacuum pile to a pen arm which
makes a mark on the chart on the drum which is driven by
clockwork.
 This system keeps a record of any changes to the barometric
pressure experienced. It is an excellent method of recording
the tendency of the barometer.
 The navigational watch keeper should mark and initial the
graph paper at regular intervals to ensure the clockwork
mechanism is functioning. The clockwork mechanism must
be wound at least once a week.
