“What is a Mammal?”
Mammals are the class of vertebrate and primarily
characterized by the presence of mammary glands. They also
have hair, and the endothermic body or we always say that as the
“warm-blooded”. The females produce milk as the source of their
food. Their brain regulates the circulatory system, including the
heart that has four divided rooms. They comprise more than 5.000
general, 425 families scattered in and up to 46 orders, although
those classifications depend on the scientific used.
The fur of mammals has many uses protection, sensory
purposes, waterproofing, and camouflage, with the primary usage
being thermoregulation. The skin of mammals is constructed of
two layers, a superficial nonvascular epidermis and an inner layer,
the dermis, or corium. The two layers interlock via fingerlike
projections (dermal papillae), consisting of sensitive vascular
dermis projecting into the epidermis. The outermost layers of the
epidermis are cornified (impregnated with various tough proteins),
and their cells are enucleate (lacking cell nuclei). The epidermis is
composed of flattened cells in layers and is the interface between
the individual and their environment. Its primary function is
defensive, and it is cornified to resist abrasion.
All mammals share at least three characteristics not found
in other animals: 3 middle-ear bones, hair, and the production of
milk by modified sweat glands called mammary glands. The three
middle ear bones, the malleus, incus, and stapes (more commonly
referred to as the hammer, anvil, and stirrup) function in the
transmission of vibrations from the tympanic membrane
(eardrum) to the inner ear. The malleus and incus are derived from
bones present in the lower jaw of mammalian ancestors. Mammals
have three bones of hearing in each ear and a bone (dentari) on
each side of the lower jaw. Mammalian hair is present in all
mammals at some point in their development. Hair has several
functions, including insulation, color patterning, and aiding in the
sense of touch. All female mammals produce milk from their
mammary glands in order to nourish newborn offspring. Thus,
female mammals invest a great deal of energy caring for each of
their offspring, a situation which has important ramifications in
many aspects of mammalian evolution, ecology, and behavior.
