AN OVERVIEW

 With the Advent of Internet, the companies began to

introduce the web-based environment that allows for
direct transaction involvement of customers in the
enterprise system.

 This web-based environment offer companies great

business opportunities:
 It helped to serve large number of customers.
 It allows customers to be more aware of companies through
easy, fast and open information.
REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTERPRISE
SYSTEM

 A good Enterprise System should have:

 High reliability,
 Availability,
 Security ,
 High system performance and capacity.
RISKS ON ENTERPRISE SYSTEM

 To be a good Enterprise System, addressing potential

contingencies is essential.

 Types of potential risks:

 Exemplification of risks
 Sudden increase in customer demand
 Unexpected system down and disaster recovery: Myriads of

factors that can cause system failure.

 Data loss: Data protection and backup is necessary.

 External Attacks: Attack from hackers.

RISKS ON ENTERPRISE SYSTEM(CONTD.)

 Interruption of business system: This will lead to serious

financial losses which could be fatal as these losses are not
covered by Insurance.

 Unplanned downtown: Any unplanned system failure may lead

to huge financial as well as credit losses.
Ex: eBay had to shut down its enterprise system and had to
rebuilt it which caused them $5m in revenue losses and $5b
loss in corporate value loss.
THE 24X365 CONCEPT

 It connotes the importance of continuous service for

customers in various business situation by delivering 24
hours and 365 days service.

 This stimulate IT companies to develop more advanced

technologies that involves features and solutions, such as
fault tolerant components, disaster recovery, data
backup, partitioning and security policy.

 But to design and implement such continuous systems is

challenge for business enterprises.
MANAGERIAL ISSUES IN IMPLEMENTING
ES
 The primary issue is the Cost: Backup network is also to
be built in case that a primary network gets into failure.
All these entail a significant amount of money.

 Another issue is the complication of the enterprise

system: ES need to cope up with the wide range of
customers and hence more complication of the ES.

 Lastly is the operational errors.

DISASTER
DISASTERRECOVERY
RECOVERY
 Since the 9/11 disaster, the importance of internet in disaster
recovery systems have become greater than ever.

 Even a short period of system down can cause tremendous

impact on the company’s business performance.

 The key concept on disaster recovery solution is how fast

and reliable one backup system can take over primary
system.
THE FUNCTIONS OF DISASTER
RECOVERY SOLUTION
 Continuous heartbeat communication between systems
either by IP heartbeat or by serial network heartbeat
enables system on a cluster to check the status of each on
real time.
MODES OF OF DISASTER RECOVERY
SOLUTION
 Mode 1: Hot standby
 A backup system is on a standby.
 On recognition of symptom of failure on the primary system the
backup system begins to run.
 The backup system will serve until the primary system comes
back on the cluster.

 Mode 2: Mutual takeover

 In this one of the system is defined as neither primary nor
backup system.
 Each system runs its own application.
 Once one system falls down, the other system takes over the
applications of the system going dowm.
PROCESS OF TAKE OVER AND
RECOVERY
 Server Problems:
 Server B takes over the disks that used to belong to server A
with problems.
 Server B activates the secondary network interface and takes
over the A’s IP address.
 Server B serves for the clients of server A.

 Network adaptors problem:

 IP is transferred to the standby network adaptor from the
primary one.
 The primary network adaptor takes over its role back from
the standby adapter after being repaired.
PROCESS OF TAKE OVER AND
RECOVERY(CONTD.)

 Network problems:
 The network adaptors in the backup network will be activated
with new IP address.
 The whole of the backup network will take over the primary
network.
SYSTEM PARTITIONING

 Partitioning is a technological concept that can offer

Enterprise Systems greater flexibility and cost efficiency.

 Partitioning can be done in case of underutilization due

to smaller no. of transaction or overutilization due to
larger no. of transaction.
FUNCTIONS OF PARTITIONING

 Company can implement multiple operating systems and

applications in one server by drawing on the partition
solution.

 The server can then change allocation of application

capacity.
SECURITY
 Because of the open and connected business world,
security issues are more important.

 There is enhancement in the system level including

operating system and more protected firewalls.

 So enterprise system must reflect security polisy in its

functions.
EXAMPLES AND CASES

 Reliable and Cost-effective system in K Life insurance

company.

 Security policy in Samsung Electronics.
