? The Lord of the Dance


In the small village of Chidambaram, 250 kms
south of Chennai, there·s a huge temple dedicated
to the god Shiva. Here Shiva is known as Nataraja
² the god of the dance. Hindus believe that in this
form Shiva dances the universe into being. This
notion, that through dance a god creates the
universe, is a very powerful one and it underpins
the essential expression of the dance of Tamil
Nadu ² the Bharatanatyam
