UMTS is a 3G wireless system that delivers high-bandwidth data and voice services to mobile users. UMTS has an air interface based on W-CDMA and an Internet protocol Core Network based on general-packet radio service (GPRS) UMTS also offers bearer services, which provide the capability for information transfer between access points.

m The universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) is
a 3G wireless system that delivers high-bandwidth data and
voice services to mobile users. UMTS evolved from global systems for mobile communications (GSM). UMTS has an air interface based on W-CDMA and an Internet protocol core network based on general-packet radio service (GPRS). m The following Figure shows the infrastructure of a UMTS wireless network. m oice and data transport is performed by the transport layer nodes, colored blue: m Node B = Base transceiver station (BTS) m RNC = Radio network controller or basestation controller (BSC) m SGSN = Serving GPRS support node m GGSN = Gateway GPRS support node m MGW = Media gateway m The call control function is mainly performed by the call control layer nodes, colored yellow: m CSCF = Call state control function m MGCF = Media gateway control function m HSS = Home subscriber server m UMTS offers teleservices (like speech or SMS) m UMTS also offers bearer services, which provide the capability for information transfer between access points. It is possible to negotiate and renegotiate the characteristics of a bearer service at session or connection establishment and during ongoing session or connection. m It offers connection oriented and connectionless services for Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint communication. m Bearer services have different QoS parameters for maximum transfer delay, delay variation and bit error rate. Offered data rate targets are: m · 144 kbits/s satellite and rural outdoor m · 384 kbits/s urban outdoor m · 2048 kbits/s indoor and low range outdoor ÷

A UMTS network consist of three interacting domains:- m Core Network (CN):-The main function of the core network is to provide switching, routing and transit for user traffic. Core network also contains the databases and network management functions
m UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) :-The UTRAN
provides the air interface access method for User Equipment.
m User Equipment(UE):-Equipments used by the user to access
