Communication
-Specific items that can distort or
prevent communication within an
organization.

-Obstacle in a workplace that prevent


effective exchange of ideas or thoughts.
The use of jargon. Over-complicated, unfamiliar
and/or technical terms.
Emotional barriers and taboos. Some people
may find it difficult to express their emotions and
some topics may be completely 'off-limits' or
taboo.
 Lack of attention, interest, distractions, or irrelevance
to the receiver.
Differences in perception and viewpoint.
 Physical disabilities such as hearing problems or
speech difficulties.
 Physical barriers to non-verbal communication. Not
being able to see the non-verbal cues, gestures, posture
and general body language can make communication less
effective.
Language differences and the difficulty in
understanding unfamiliar accents.
 Expectations and prejudices which may lead to false
assumptions or stereotyping. People often hear what
they expect to hear rather than what is actually said and
jump to incorrect conclusions.
 Cultural differences. The norms of social interaction
vary greatly in different cultures, as do the way in which
emotions are expressed.

Verbal/Nonverbal Dimensions.
Verbal Dimensions - sharing of information
between individuals by using speech.
Nonverbal Dimensions - includes pitch,
speed, tone and volume of voice, gestures and
facial expressions, body posture, stance, proximity
to the listener, and eye movements.
Oral/Written Dimensions.
Oral Dimensions – implies communication
through mouth.
Written Dimensions – involves any type of
interaction that make uses of written words.
Formal/Informal Dimensions.
Formal Dimensions - is the
exchange of official information that flows
along the different levels of the
organizational hierarchy and conforms to
the prescribed professional rules, policy,
standards, processes and regulations of
the organization. This follows a proper
predefined channel of communication
and is deliberately controlled.
Informal Dimensions - is the casual and unofficial
form of communication wherein the information is
exchanged spontaneously between two or more persons
without conforming the prescribed official rules, processes,
system, formalities and chain of command.

 Intentional/Unintentional Dimensions
Intentional Dimensions – can also be called as
“Conscious Communication” this implies that we are
speaking with awareness of our purpose and its effect on
others.
Unintentional Dimensions – can also be called as
“Unconscious Communication” this doesn’t have a purpose,
but may be transmitted by actions as well as by words.
