Lead application servers
 A disk-based solution
deployed on a
Redundant Array of
IXOS ECR
Independent Nodes
(RAIN)
Network
API

Access Nodes Storage Nodes

 Enhanced by highly
sophisticated and
automated software:
- Centera software runs
across all nodes and
 Self-configuring completely virtualizes the
 Self-healing architecture
 Self managing - No need to worry about data
storage logistics
Centera Repository
Centera’s Architecture and
Implementation - II

 Standard hardware deployed in one or more six-foot

racks
- Up to 8,16,24 or 32 nodes* possible per rack
- Up to 16 racks can be configured as a single cluster
 Protocol / Connection
- TCP/IP - connected via IP address
 No single point of failure
- Two AC power sources
- Automatic failover of client ethernet connections
- Always two copies of data objects
- Self-healing if capacity component fails
- Continous background data validation
one node corresponds to one PC

Integration into IXOS-eCONserver

 Integrated into STORM

Virtual Jukebox 1  Treated as HDWO* media
ISO images  Stored as ISO Image - Read
only !
 Advantage:
- Reduced number of content
addresses
- Easy backup to optical media -
planned
Network
IP addresses - Device independent integration
 Centera treated as virtual
jukebox
IXOS ECR  Read access to single
documents or parts of
documents possible
Virtual Jukebox N - Centera characteristics are
transparent to the clients

* HDWO: hard disk write once

How IXOS ECR Accesses the
Centera Repository - I

Centera

IXOS ECR

ISO image is created by IXOS- 
eCONserver image is sent to Centera via
Centera API over IP

 Content Address returned to
IXOS-eCONserver
Content Address is stored on

configuration

Configure Centera as
device

 Create a device description file (DDF)

 Add device to STORM device list: server.cfg

Compliance Edition Yes Disabled Yes

Compliance Edition Plus Yes Disabled No

IXOS recommends to use Compliance Edition

Support of Retention Periods by IXOS
ECR

 Add retention=x
to DDF* of virtual jukebox
 x: retention period in DAYS
 If no retention period is specified, STORM sets a
default of 365 days
 Use several virtual jukeboxes to define different
retention periods
 After retention period has expired, data CAN be
deleted, but will not be deleted automatically
 Centera just allows deletion.
An application is needed to actually delete the data.
 Deletion of data has to be in sync with leading
application!
