WORKING CONDITIONS. BECAUSE THE
INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYEE, OR EVEN A SMALL
GROUP OF EMPLOYEES, HAS A LIMITED
AMOUNT OF POWER TO BARGAIN WITH THE
EMPLOYERS.

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING UNITS. THOSE

 ONE GROUP WAS FOR EMPLOYEES
CLASSIFIED AS PROFESSIONALS, THIS
INCLUDES DIETITIANS, PHARMACISTS, AND
OTHERS WHO HAD MODERATELY
EXTENSIVE EDUCATION, AND HAD TAKEN
LICENSURE EXAMINATIONS.
 SECOND GROUP WAS FOR
NONPROFESSIONALS.
IN THE YEAR 1991 A SEPARATE ALL-RN
BARGAINING UNITE UNDER THE
PROVISION AND PROTECTION OF THE
NLRA (NATIONAL LABOR RELATIONS ACT)
THE DECISION OPENED THE WAY FOR THE
NLRB TO ESTABLISH THE “EIGHT UNIT RULE”,
WHICH IDENTIFIES THE EIGHT BARGAINING
UNITS IN HOSPITALS. THOSE ARE,
 NURSES,
 PHYSICIANS,
 ALL OTHER PROFESSIONALS
 TECHNICAL EMPLOYEES,
 SKILLED MAINTANANCE EMPLOYEES,
 BUSINESS OFFICE AND CLERICAL EMPLOYEES,
 ALL OTHER NON PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES,
 GUARDS,
OCCUPATIONAL UNIONISM MEANS THAT
THERE ARE SEPARATE UNIONS FOR EACH
OCCUPATION WITH A GIVEN COMPANY
AND THAT THESE OCCUPATIONAL
GROUPS MIGHT JOIN OTHERS TO LIKE
WORK ACROSS BOUNDARIES AND
ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

 IN UNION EFFORTS AND COLLECTIVE
BARGAINING, FORMS OF POWER INCLUDES
STRIKES, DEMONSTRATIONS, LOCKOUTS,
BOYCOTTS AND PICKETING.
 TRADITIONAL UNION HAD ONE SOURCE OF
POWER; THE NEGATIVE, REACTIVE ABILITY TO
THWART MANAGEMENT DECISIONS TO SLOW
AND ABSTRUCT WORK BY SAYING, ‘NO’.
 THE GOALS OF COLLECTIVE BARGAINIG ARE
ACHIEVED BY IMPOSING RULES ON
EMPLOYERS ABOUT HOW TO TREAT
EMPLOYEES REPRESENTED BY A UNION.
