What is Infrared Radiation ?

Infrared radiation is a part of the elegtromagnetic spectrum. The name means “under
red” (from the Latin infra, "below"), red is the color of visible light with the longest wave.
The main source of infrared radiation is through temperature or thermal radiation.
The more heat, the more movement the atoms and molecules have, and the more infrared
radiation is produced. Every object that is above zero temperature Kelvin definitely emit
infrared radiation.
ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM
Near Infrared
Wavelengths 0.75–1.50 µm

Medium Infrared
Wavelengths 1.50-10 µm

Far Infrared
Wavelengths 10–100 µm
The Characteristics of Infrared Light
Can’t be seen by
humans.

Wavelength have the opposite relation or

inversely proportional to the temperature. As
the temperature increase, the wavelength
decrease.

NOTES :
The receiver of infrared should have:
1. High sensitivity 2. Fast response time
William Herschel
Sir Frederick William Herschel (1738 – 1822)
was born in Hanover, Germany and became well known as
both a musician and as an astronomer. He moved to
England in 1757 and, with his sister Caroline, constructed
telescopes to survey the night sky. Their work resulted in
several catalogs of double stars and nebulae. Herschel is
famous for his discovery of the planet Uranus in 1781, the
first new planet found since antiquity. In addition,
Herschel discovered infrared radiation.

Conclution
Infrared radiation is an invisible light
source. Radiation generated by the electrons in
the molecules vibrate because of heated objects.
This ray have wavelength between
700 nanometers (nm) to 1 mm and has the
1011Hz frequency up to 1014 Hz. It has
advantage for many kinds of subject in our life
such as in health, astronomy, terminology, etc.
