Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
 Inflammation of the bowel.

 The most common inflammatory bowel diseases are Ulcerative

Colitis and Crohn’sdisease. They are so closely related they are
usually mistaken for one another. (Ulcerative colitis is more
common than Chrohn’s disease.)

 Affects the large intestine (colon) www.webmd.com

Inflammatory Bowel Disease
 Ulcerative Colitis
- Inflammation and sores (ulcers) in the lining of the
large intestine. (Ooouchh) Usually effects the left side
of the colon (sigmoid colon) and the rectum.
- Ulcerative colitis usually affects a continuous
section of the inner lining of the colon beginning
with the rectum

Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis varies from one person to
another.
 Some people may only experience mild
symptoms while other people experience
severe symptoms. Unusual cases may be
life threatening.
 Most people with ulcerative colitis have
periods of remission that may last up to
several years.
Ulcerative Colitis
 Symptoms
- Severe “bouts” of watery or bloody diarrhea
- Abdominal pain ( Cramping)
- Rectal Bleeding ( If you have hemorrhoids those
also can cause rectal bleeding)
- Constipation (depending on what part of the
colon is affected.)
- Loss of appetite
- In severe cases, fever
Ulcerative Colitis
 Symptoms

- Weight loss ( sometimes due to diarrhea)

- Anemia, Some people develop anemia

because their iron levels are low due to
bloody stools or intestinal inflammaion.
Ulcerative Colitis
 Symptoms
- Oral lesions ( canker sore, cold sores )
on the lips tongues insides of mouth. The
lesions are superficial and limited to the
mucosa and submucosa. Theses lesions
( ulcers) are similar to the ulcers in the
colon.
 Causes:
- Immune system: Possible virus or bacteria, the
digestive tract becomes inflamed when the
immune system tries to fight off invading
microorganisms.
- Heredity: Genetic makeup may play a role.
Genetic mutations might increase possibility.
- May result from an abnormal respnose of the
immune system to normal intestinal bacteria
Ulcerative Colitis
 Diagnosis
- Blood Tests: to check for anemia or signs
of infection

- Colonoscopy: thin flexible lighted tube

with an attached camera. ( done while you
are not awake)
Ulcerative Colitis
– Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: thin lighted tube to
examine the sigmoid section of the colon.
– ( last 2 feet of your colon. ) Test usually takes
a few minutes, can be done in the office not
under anesthetics.
Ulcerative Colitis
 Diagnosis
- Barium enema: Allows the to examine the
large intestine with and x-ray. Barium
(whitish liquid) is inserted through the
rectum into the colon and large intestine.
It sticks to the walls allowing it to show up
clearly on the x-ray
Ulcerative Colitis
 Treatment
- The goal of treatment is to reduce the
inflammation that triggers the signs and
symptoms. Depending on how severe the case
may be surgery may be an option, which is to
either remove part of your colon or have a
proctocolectomy. In the past after this surgery
you would have to wear a bag, now surgeons
can construct a pouch from the end of you small
intestine to you anus. About 25%-40% of people
with ulcerative colitis eventually need surgery.
Ulcerative Colitis
 Treatment
 Drugs
- Sulfasalazine
- Mesalamine and olsalazine (Dipentum)
- Balsalazide
- Corticosteroids
- Fish oil
Ulcerative Colitis
 Treatment
- Experiment with fiber
- Avoid problem foods ( gassy foods, raw fruit
juices and fruits, citrus, spicy food, popcorn,
alcohol, caffeine..)
- Eat small meal ( 5-6 small meals vs. 2-3 big
meals )
- Drink plenty of liquids (water is best)
- Multivitamins
- Talk to a dietitian
Ulcerative Colitis
 Treatment
- Avoid Stress ( learn better ways to deal
with it, stress causes flare ups)
- Exercise
- Limit Dairy Products ( take calcium
supplements with vitamin d though to
replace what you lose by not taking in as
many dairy product)
Ulcerative Colitis
 Coping With Ulcerative Colitis
- Well over 500,000 Population in “usa” suffer
from and inflammatory bowel disease.
- It’s not the end of the world when if you come
to find out that you have a form of an
inflammatory bowel disease. Yeah of course it
gets you down sometimes knowing that you
can’t do what you used to do and eat what you
used to eat. And sometimes the flare ups are
very uncomfortable.
Ulcerative Colitis
 Coping
- You have to change your life to fit the disease. You’ll
learn what you can and can’t eat. Don’t get discouraged
technology is awesome, and doctors are great, they will
do everything they can to take care of you. I know this
because I have Ulcerative Colitis, I still do everything I
did, before I had ulcerative colitis. I’m active and I’m
always looking to have fun. The happier I am the less
the disease seems to bother me, plenty of exercise and
healthy eating and you can live a perfectly “normal” life.

YOU
