By: Gustavo Ramirez
What is Arthritis?
O Arthritis is caused by inflammation of the
tissue lining the joints.

O There are over 100 types of arthritis and

people of all ages, sexes and races can
develop some type of arthritis.

O It is more common among women and occurs

frequently as people get older.
Different types of Arthritis
O Psoriatic Arthritis - is an autoimmune
inflammatory disease in which the immune
system attacks the body, causing
inflammation and pain.

O Gout - is a form of inflammatory arthritis,

but it does not cause body-wide
inflammation like RA or PsA does.
Different types of Arthritis

O Osteoarthritis -affect all intra-articular

and periarticular tissues comprising synovial
joints.

O Rheumatoid Arthritis – when the joints and

other organs are attacked by the body’s
own immune system.
Osteoarthritis vs. Rheumatoid
O Osteoarthritis most common with aging and
most often affects fingers, knees, and hips.

O Rheumatoid Arthritis is a autoimmune disease

that affects joints and bones, often of the hands
and feet.

Treatment
O The process underlying osteoarthritis cannot
be reversed, but symptoms can usually be
effectively managed.
O Exercising and weight loss is one of the most
beneficial ways to treat osteoarthritis.
Study 1
O Purpose: To assess how dance based
exercise and Tai Chi can improve quality of
life with people with arthritis.
O Methods: 19 people (n=10 controlled group,
n=9 sedentary).
O Results: The data reveal that dance-based
exercises and Tai Chi may be very useful
rehabilitation strategies for people with
different forms of arthritis.
Study 2
O Purpose: This study demonstrate the
benefits of moderate-intensity exercises on
physical activity and mental health in RA
patients compared to their sedentary
counterparts.
O Methods: 22 patients (n=11 training group
and n=11 sedentary group).
O Results: The sedentary group showed
negative affects due to lack of exercise.
Study 3
O Purpose: To assess balance and function on
subjects with knee osteoarthritis and look at the
influence of physical exercise.
O Methods: Subjects were divided into three
groups: Group 1 (n = 15), symptomatic knee OA;
Group 2 (n = 11), asymptomatic knee OA; and
Group 3 (n = 16), knee OA and no intervention.
O Results: Group 1 showed a significant difference
in pain and functional domains. Group 2 showed
significant differences in decreased time on the
Step Up/Over test and postural sway increased.
