INTRODUCTION

 Soil-less culture is the method of growing agricultural crops without the

use of soil. Instead of soil, various inert growing media, also called
substrates, are used.
Darko, E., Heydarizadeh, P., Schoefs, B., Sabzalian M.R.,. Photosynthesis
under artificial light: the shift in primary and secondary metabolism
 Hydroponics refers to growing plants in a wide variety of media other
than soil.
Bridwell, R. Hydroponic Gardening. Santa Barbara, CA: Woodbridge Press,
1974.

INTRODUCTION

 The development of hydroponics in terms of its automation and

manipulation is one way of addressing solution to the problems that
the agriculture is now facing. It will also aid farmers on the
maintenance and growth development of their plants.
7

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

 Issues regarding monitoring the needed parameters like humidity and

temperature of the system, water level, electric conductivity, water
temperature, water pH, and intensity of light.
 There is also a need on the automation of the hydroponic system to
maintain environment and nutrients requirements in growing the
plants.
Thus, the main content of this research is to enhance the automation of
an hydroponics system.
8

Objective of the Study

The goal of this study is to develop a new system of automation and

control in a hydroponics system. In order to achieve this research, the
following specific objectives should be attain:
a) To monitor and control the humidity, temperature of the system,
water level, water pH, electric conductivity and intensity of light.
b) To implement GSM Module that prompt the owner in case of
irregularities in the system.
c) To monitor the generated solar power.
9

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will help farmers and urban people on monitoring and
maintaining the needs of their crops with the use of technology. To
enhance growing capability of the plants as well as its production.
10

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study is focusing on the automation, monitoring and controls of the

small scale hydroponics system. In which it will only use microcontroller
device (Arduino) for programming the sensors to be used in controlling
and monitoring the desired temperature, humidity, electric conductivity,
water pH, and intensity of light. The plants used for this study are Silver
beet, spinach and lettuce.
