IRS Bridge Rules
Specifies various loads to be taken into consideration
for design of bridges and assessing the strength of
existing bridges:
a) Dead load
b) Live load
c) Dynamic effect
d) Forces due to curvature or eccentricity of track
e) Temperature effect
f) Frictional resistance of expansion bearings
g) Longitudinal force
h) Racking force

n) Load due to Plasser ’ s Quick Relay System
(PQRS)
IRS Steel Bridge Code

This code is applicable to design of Super-

structure of simply supported steel bridges(
OWG, PG) spans; up to 100m. It broadly specify
followings:
a) Combination of loads
b) Permissible stresses
c) Camber provisions in OWG
d) Deflection criteria
e) Design provision of sliding, roller & rocker
bearings
f) Provisions for riveting
IRS Bridge Sub-structures & Foundation Code
This code is applicable to design & construction of
sub-structure and foundations of Railway bridges.
It broadly covers the following aspects:
a) Estimation of design discharge and water way
requirements
b) Loads, forces & stresses on sub-structure
c) Provisions for determination of earth pressure
acting on abutments, wing walls etc.
d) Provision of Buoyancy effect
e) Provisions for design of new sub-structures &
foundation
f) Checking of existing masonry & concrete sub-
structures
IRS Concrete Bridge Code
Applies to the use of plain, reinforced, prestressed
concrete in Railway Bridge construction both insitu
construction and manufacture of precast units. It
broadly covers the followings:
a) Specifications for material and workmanship of
concrete, reinforcement and prestressing tendons.
b) Limit state requirements
c) Load combination and partial load factors.
d) Characteristic strength and partial safety
factors for material.
e) Analysis of structure and section.
f) Load testing
IRS Welded Bridge Code
Applicable to design, construction & inspection of welds
made by manual, semi automatic metal arc process of
new and existing steel bridges. It broadly covers the
followings:
•Material requirements
•Drawing and procedure sheets
•Minimum sizes of fillet wells with respect to plate
thickness to be welded
•Specification for design of lap joints
•Preparation of joint faces
•Permissible stresses in welds
•Procedure for approval of testing and welding
•Approval and testing of welders
