BIOMIMICRY
is an approach to innovation that seeks
sustainable solutions to human challenges by
emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and
strategies.
VIBRATIONS
TYPES OF WAVES
Transverse wave
Longitudinal wave
TRANSVERSE WAVE
An apparatus that
converts electrical
impulse into
sound
Wave and Vibration to Design Technology
Sound Navigation And Ranging
Method of detecting, locating and determining the
speed of objects through the use of sound waves
The sonar system is installed in every ship to determine the
depth of the sea, and to locate underwater hills, valleys,
submarines, icebergs and even sunken ships.
Bat’s echolocation
Bats use their sonar system to find their way around
in the pitch dark and when flying over water to drink
Bats can produce a frequency of 100,000 waves per second. Special muscles in
its throat allow a bat to chirp 160 to 190 times per second. Because the bat
receive many information from its environment, it makes various patterns of its
chirp relative to the object’s size and distance and creates a plan on how to
interact to objects in the dark.
Wave and Vibration to Design Technology
ELECTROSHOCK
an incapacitating
weapon.
delivers an electric
shock aimed at
temporarily disrupting
muscle function
Uses a temporary high-voltage. Low-current electrical
discharge to override the body’s muscle-triggering
mechanisms.
ELECTIC EEL
an electric fish, and the
only species in its genius
ELECTROLOCATION
process where certain
species or aquatic
amphibian can detect
electric fields using
specialized
electroreceptors
The fish generates an electric field around its body
Nearby objects in the water perturb the electric field
Local perturbations are
detected by
electroreceptors on the
fish`s body surface
Wave and Vibrations to Design Technology
First crossed
CleanTechnica’s radar
back in 2008, when
compared the new
wave technology
concept to kelp.
Gives actually a twofer of potential and kinetic wave
energy harvesting
Based on structure and
movements of a seaweed
“We designed it with a
highly efficient pivoting
structure, reminiscent of the
natural swaying motion that
a plant would undergo in
the waves”
This biomimetic approach not only helps the biowave harvest
wave energy more efficiently, it also keeps it safe in rough
conditions
