“SPEC’D” – What DOES THAT MEAN???
.
0
5
S
A
Spec Selling – Level ONE
L
E Spec selling can be broken into at least THREE levels or groups:
S
M
T FUNCTIONAL SPEC - At minimum, a functional specification should
G
.
precisely state the purpose (e.g., the function) of the product.
0
5
– Depending on the application, the functional specification might also
provide for how the product interacts with other components (e.g., the
control system logic or user interface).
– E.g. we are on the approved vendors list!
Good job - But nothing extra special. This should be an every day
occurrence
S
A
Spec Selling – Level TWO
L
E Spec selling can be broken into at least THREE levels or groups:
S
M
T SPECIFIED (driver) - At minimum, a “specified product” is one wherein
G
.
the product is referred to or utilized beyond a simple AVL listing.
0
5
– E.g. - A product thus referred to is DRIVING the spec (e.g., shown on a
data sheets/ drawings AND SPECIFIC FEATURES OR BENEFITS OR
REFERRED TO).
– Often this spec will allow others, but at their expense or exception!
S
A
Spec Selling – Level THREE
L
E Spec selling can be broken into at least THREE levels or groups:
S
M
T
G
. “SOLE SPEC” - A formal description identifying a product or system
0
5
that is brand and ID specific (e.g. model numbers or family reference.
S
A
Spec Selling – Level THREE
L
E
S
How do I get there?
Early birds get the order!
M
T Know your customers.
G
. – Call on them when nothing special is occurring – FACE TIME IS FAMILIAR TIME.
0 – Familiar time is a comfort zone. A good place.
5
Separate and win – Do not let the strong desire for a “package” delete the
individual strengths. BE FLEXABLE. Make sure the customer understands that
you can “bend”
Sorry, but if you found out about a project from a public article or after it has
been awarded you are a door solicitor.
S
A
Spec Selling – Tangible Features
L
E Spec selling can be broken into two basic groups:
S
M
T Tangible/prominent features – Physical attributes that can be easily
G
.
seen, touched or understood. IE; Internal tie bars, stop adjustment travel
0 and manual overrides. This is the easiest strategy to implement (show

and tell).
– DO YOUR HOMEWORK! What are the two - three topics that are most
important?
S
A
Spec Selling – Value Selling
L
E Spec selling can be broken into two basic groups:
S
M
T Benefits derived – An appreciation of the VALUE of the product. IE;
G
.
Life cycle cost savings (less maintenance & higher reliability = lower
0 operating costs), brand consciousness (warranty & experience) and all
5
intangibles that separate you from the rest.
S
A
Spec Selling – Know Thy Competition
L
E
S
M
If you do not KNOW your competition’s product, how do
T you expect to drive a spec?
G
.
0
How are your going to establish a preference?
5
– How many of you can name a competitors basic model numbers and
product range?

significantly lighter and requires less space than other scotch-yoke

Notes :
Comparisions are made at 5 Bar Air Pressure
The Spring End Torque is the main criteria for the comparision
80+% of the application is Spring Return - Fail Close
Hence Spring End Torque compares with Valve Reseating Torque
The Reseating Torque for the Ball Valve is assumed @ 80% of Valve Break

S
design and construction such that all parts are interchangeable with
like parent models or components with no special measures
M
T required to fit. Preference shall be given to actuator designs which
G aid in reducing parts database, supply chain, inventory and allows

Features & Benefits - Internal Tie Bars
L
E G-Series Pneumatic Power Modules feature internal tie bars, which
S
guide the piston in the cylinder bore, preventing metal to metal
M contact between piston and cylinder wall. Thereby precluding the
T need for inefficient piston head bearings and metallic coatings.
G
.
0
Internal Tie Bars This feature allows for the use of XylanTM,
5 which is extremely corrosion resistant. Xylan
also has excellent lubricity characteristics,
thus adding to the actuator efficiencies and
reducing piston seal wear.
Actuators with external tie bars can suffer
from premature corrosion problems due to
inadequate “paint” coverage between tie bars
and cylinder walls, end caps voids which
cannot typically be visually inspected and are
more susceptible to mechanical impact
damage
S
A
Features & Benefits - Internal Tie Bars
L
E Spec it indirectly – All external tie bars actuators shall have rolled
S
threads for strength. Machined threads removed from material OD
are not allowed.
M
T Spec it indirectly – All pressure containing tie bars shall have a
G
.
minimum tensile strength design safety factor of at least four to one.
0 PED compliance is not a substitute for this requirement.
5

band Pneumatic pistons having
a piston diameter of > 10”
shall not utilize o-rings as
primary piston to cylinder
wall seals. All such seals
should be of an anti-spiral
failure type. D seals or T
seals are preferred.

pressure containing tie bars
actuators shall have a mechanical

G preventing the tie containment nuts
. from backing off. Thread locking

tie bars is not allowed.
Spec it directly - Pneumatic
actuator cylinder bores shall have
either a temperature cured,
flourocarbon based coating
(preferred) or minimum of three
mils electroless nickel coating
(ENP). No chrome based cylinder
coating is allowed. (3 mils is extra
for all others)
ENP “Flash” Coating
S
A
Features & Benefits - Pressure Port (SR)
L
E The inboard pressure port location minimizes exposure of supply
S
tubing, thus reducing the opportunity for mechanical damage on
spring-return units. Pneumatic units feature NPT ports while
M
T hydraulic units feature SAE ports. All ports are uniquely marked.

Features & Benefits - Breather
L
E G-Series actuators incorporate a 316 stainless steel, normally

closed cylinder check valve/breather that allows pressure
equalization to atmospheric conditions during operation.
