Work Breakdown Structure
Why Create a WBS?
• Uses graphical format to facilitate clear
understanding.
• Uses hierarchical approach to identify all work.
• Serves as communication tool among stakeholders.
• Allows team to “get their arms around” the project.
• Becomes the foundation for planning.
• Is used as a tool to evaluate scope changes.
• Can be used as a template for future projects.
• Allows team members to understand how their work
fits in the project.
• Gets team buy-in.

Concepts You Should Know
 Scope management objectives:
 Avoid scope creep
 Ensure that all project work is completed as agreed
 Product scope focuses on:
 Characteristics of the product, service, or result
 Work required to deliver the product, service, or result
 Requirements document provides categorized and
prioritized list of stakeholder requirements.
 Requirements traceability matrix links identified and
agreed-upon requirements to business and project
objectives to ensure that they add business value.

Key Concepts (cont.)

 Collect Requirements process:

 Involves completely determining and documenting
stakeholder needs
 Group creativity techniques include brainstorming, NGT,
Delphi, idea/mind mapping, and affinity diagrams.
 Group decision making techniques include unanimity,
majority, plurality, and dictatorship.
 Define Scope process: Develops detailed description of
project and product

Key Concepts (cont.)

 Create WBS process:

 Breaks down major project deliverables into more
manageable components
 Facilitates:
 More accurate estimates
 Clearer responsibility assignments
 Development of performance measurement and control
baselines
 WBS:
 Deliverable-oriented hierarchical decomposition
 Organizes and defines total scope of the project

Key Concepts (cont.)

●  Scope baseline consists of:

 Scope statement
 WBS
 WBS dictionary
●  Verify Scope process: Obtains formal acceptance of
project scope deliverables from stakeholders
●  Control Scope process:
 Monitors status of project and product scope
 Controls changes
