Note:
(1) The pole and wall installations use the same mounting kit delivered by default. Another type of
mounting kit is required for AAU5940s horizontally installed or installed on the top of a pole and the
mounting kit needs to be delivered separately.

 Vertical beam adjustment: The narrow- or wide-beam mode can be selected through the beam width adjustable unit. The
wide-beam mode is used to improve the vertical-plane coverage for tall buildings. The narrow-beam mode applies to common
streets and buildings with low heights.
 The narrow- or wide-beam mode is not under license control. The wide-beam mode is enabled using MML commands.

Precautions:
1. Wide beams are not recommended in this scenario.
2. The AU specifications in the horizontal installation scenario correspond to those in narrow-beam mode in the vertical installation scenario.
That is, the horizontal beam width interchanges with the vertical one in the two scenarios.
3. The horizontal azimuth is adjusted by rotating the mounting kit. The RET is not recommended for adjusting the horizontal azimuth.
4. The vertical tilt angle is adjusted through pitch angle adjustment.

Precautions:
1. For medium- and high-rise buildings, the antenna gain does not matter most, but balanced coverage matters most for the
coverage effect.
2. Mounting kits for horizontal installation are independently sold and delivered. Mounting kits for vertical installation are delivered
by default.
3. Wide beams and electrical downtilt adjustment are not recommended.

1. Pole- or wall-mounted installation applies to both street-side and rooftop scenarios.

2. Installation on the top of a pole is applicable to the rooftop scenario. Adopting this type makes the appearance more like an
exhaust pipe, which is more environment friendly. Mounting kits for this kind of installation are delivered separately, and
customers need to provide the installation flange by themselves. Therefore, this type is a special solution.

AAU5940 Pole-Top Installation—Pole
1. When AAU5940 is installed on the top of a pole, the pole and AAU are connected by the flange. Users
design the flange by themselves and weld or assemble it to the pole, to form the pole components
2. Requirements for the flange dimensions on the top of a pole are shown in the following figures.
3. The recommended wall thickness of a pole is more than 4 mm. The pole diameter is the same as the
diameter of the flange shown in the following figure.

AAU5940 Pole-Top Installation—Thin Pole
1. When AAU5940 is installed on the top of a thin pole, the flange dimensions and installation holes on the top
can be interposed as above. An adapting flange can be considered. The adapting flange and the pole can be
welded or assembled together. Refer to the following figure:

Scenarios
1. In horizontal installation scenarios, the main bracket is installed at an angle of 0° by default. Its angle can be adjusted in the
range of -30° to 30°.
2. In horizontal installation scenarios, adjust the tilt of the antenna according to the scale plate on one side of the main bracket.
Precaution: When the AAU is horizontally installed, the adjustment of horizontal azimuth is implemented through rotating
mounting kits.

1. Place an inclinometer at the rear of the cable clamping

case at the bottom of the AAU to check whether the support
for installing the AAU is completely vertical.
2. If the angle on the inclinometer is 0°, the support is
vertical and the antenna tilt can be adjusted according to the
scale plate on the main bracket. 1. Loosen the bolt on the angle adjusting component, and adjust the angle

lightning strikes, if the following two conditions are met in the
installation site of the AAU:
a. When the AAU is pole-mounted or pole-top-mounted, the
distance between the top of the pole and that of the AAU is
less than 30 cm.
b. The installation site of the AAU is not within the protection
coverage of the lightning rod near.
3. If a lightning rod is going to be installed in the installation site of
the AAU, the following conditions should be met:
a. The lightning rod must be 30 cm higher than the top of the
AAU.
b. The lightning rod must be grounded properly.
c. The ground cable of the AAU must be connected to the
ground bar of the ground grid.
In addition to the preceding requirements, the lightning rod must be
installed according to the related surge protection standard of the
building.

Surge Protection
1. The AAU5940 has a built-in 20 kA surge protector. An external surge protector is not required in
the following scenarios:
 An indoor AAU5940 provides coverage for outdoor area.
 An AAU5940 is installed on an urban street pole (lower than the surrounding buildings), an
outdoor wall, or a roof pole.
2. When the AC AAU5940 is powered through a cable routed overhead in non-urban areas (see
the figure below), it is advised to add the SPM06A (an external surge protector which needs to
be deployed independently). Reason: The long-distance overhead cabling greatly increases
the probability that the AC power cable is struck by induction lightning. Without surge
protection measures on the equipment side, the probability of damage to the equipment is
increased.

Copyright © 2017 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Page 38
Installation Height of the AC AAU5940

1. Because of the possible installation and security risks resulted from routing AC
power cables on a tower, the tower-mounted installation is not recommended for
the AC AAU5940.
2. The AAU5940 can be installed on a street side pole or a simple stand. During
equipment installation and cable layout, comply with the following principles:
a. Power cable layout and protection must follow the local laws, industry
standards, and requirements of telecom operators.
b. When laying power cables, ensure that the power cables are waterproofed and
protected with PVC corrugated pipes or metal conduits. If metal conduits are
used, ensure that the two ends of metal conduits are properly grounded.
3. An AC device can be installed at a place with a maximum distance of 10 m
above the ground.

Notes: Damage to the insulation layer of the AC power cables may cause lightning
strike to personnel that are close to the pole or tower during cable layout or usage.
Therefore, take appropriate protection measures on AC power cables when laying out
or using the cables.

Functions and Application Scenarios of the ODM04A
Typical scenarios:
1. The BBU is installed in the remote equipment room, and the AAU is installed outdoor on a street-side pole.
2. The CPRI port of the BBU is connected to that of the AAU through the ODF, pigtail, and trunk optical cable.
