▪ Definition / Set Up
▪ Model / Proposal
▪ Argument
▪ Rebuttal
▪ POI
DEFINITION / SET UP

▪ Delivered by the Government

▪ Definition must give a clear set up to the motion
– Example: THW allow abortion
▪ Definition of abortion: abortion before 6 months pregnancy by
legal couple.

▪ Has to be supported with logical reasoning!

▪ May not be too narrow!!
– Example: THW leave school uniform
▪ Definition of school: my school.
DEFINITION / SET UP

• Definition DONTS!
– Truisms
• Defining a motion to something that is true
– Ex: THW ban international labors from entering Indonesia
» Definition of International labors = illegal international labors
– Squirrels
• Defining a motion in a wrong meaning of the motion for your own good
– Ex: THBT free trade brings more harm than good
» Definition of free trade = barter
– Wrong time and place setting
• Defining a motion in narrow place and time setting to advantage you
DEFINITION / SET UP FAQs

• What if you were the Opposition and your

Government delivered unfair definition as
mentioned in previous slide?
– It’s suggested to CLARIFY before doing a DEFINITIONAL
CHALLENGE
• Clarification:
– Clarify the issues of debate or what should be debated (does not require new
definition, rebuttal to clashed argument’s allowed)
• Definitional Challenge:
– Challenge the definition by creating a new one (require new definition, ANY
REBUTTAL TO ARGUMENT IS UNNECESSARY)
MODEL

▪ In proposal debate (mostly THW motion) both

Government and Opposition are obliged to propose
a model.
– Example:
THW create nuclear generators in Indonesia
▪ Model: Nuclear Power Plants Model as applied in EU countries
– EXPLANATION WHY APPLY THIS MODEL HAS TO BE GIVEN!
MODEL

▪ Logical reasoning and elaboration is needed in explaining

the proposal
▪ If opening government already created a model, the
closing government can either go with the opening
model or make it wider / narrow:
– Closing Example: to handle issues, the government would
cooperate to other country which use nuclear generator like
Japan
MODEL

▪ The opposition teams are expected to deliver counter

model!
▪ Counter model should able to solve the problem rose by
government
– Ex: in THW make nuclear generators in Indonesia, the problem
rose by government is electricity problem. So the counter model
should able to solve the electricity problem.
PROPOSAL / MECHANISM FAQs
• My opponent does not deliver any PROPOSAL or COUNTER
PROPOSAL!
– I’m happy for you, chance to win the debate!
– By the way, you could rebut them by saying they don’t have any proposal or
counter proposal in debate which require a proposal, huge point!!!
• PROPOSAL OR COUNTER PROPOSAL is fundamental, so I spent 5
minutes just to deliver them, it’s ok right?
– HELL NO! it’s best to spend maximum 2 minutes to deliver proposal or
counter.
• My dumb 1st speaker forget to deliver proposal, what should I do?
– There will be point deduction, but better deliver it on your next speaker.
ARGUMENT
▪ Simple argument structure:
– A = Assertion
– R = Reasoning
– E = Evidence
– L = link-back
Example:
▪ Analysis on motion: THW create nuclear generators in Indonesia
▪ Assertion: Indonesia needs alternative energy
▪ Reasoning: fossil fuels are running out and nuclear has the strongest power
to generate electricity
▪ Evidence: as it is stated from nuclearfiles.org, the fossil fuels in Indonesia
will be depleted in 20 more years
▪ Link-back: nuclear generator is required to solve the energy problem in
Indonesia
ARGUMENT

▪ Argument should be delivered brief and clear.

– Don’t hang your case!
▪ Hanging means you explain about A, then your next speaker give
more elaboration about A
▪ (It’s supposed to be your job to explain A clearly the moment you
introduce it to Adjudicators!)

▪ Argument should be made with logical reasoning

– Don’t say ‘we would create nuclear generators because we
think nuclear is cute’
CLOSING TEAMS ARGUMENT

▪ As closing team, you may not deliver same

arguments as your Opening.
▪ If somehow what you have prepared is exactly the
same with what your Opening has presented, I have
two tips for you:
– Zoom In / Zoom Out
– Further Analysis
CLOSING TEAMS ARGUMENT

▪ ZOOM IN / ZOOM OUT

– Deliver your argument by setting a new limit which is
different with what your Opening has brought.
▪ Examples :
THW Apply Sex Tourism in Developing Nations
Opening Argument : Improve Economy of Indonesia
– Zoom In : Most of People in Indonesia are unemployed yet uneducated and
Sex Tourism will be a best option
– Zoom Out : Economy of other developing nations will be improved too!
CLOSING TEAMS ARGUMENT

▪ FURTHER ANALYSIS
– Elaborate the argument that has been brought by the
Opening clearer! Give more reasoning!
▪ Example:
– THW Apply Sex Tourism in Developing Nations
– Opening Argument : Improve Economy of Indonesia as
Indonesia needs money
▪ Further Analysis : Sex Tourism never dies, the demand is very
high yet the supply is rather low, this can be an opportunity
REBUTTAL

▪ Rebuttal is not a question!

▪ Rebuttal is not asking guarantee!
▪ Rebuttal neglects the idea of the opponent by
explaining that your idea is better
▪ 3 ways of rebutting:
– Prove your opponent is wrong
– Prove yours are better than your opponent’s
– Prove your opponent’s argument is irrelevant
REBUTTAL FAQs

▪ My Opening Sucks! Can I rebut my Opening?

– No. Your Opening is YOUR TEAM!
▪ My Opening brought my rebuttal!
– Make new rebuttals! Repeating rebuttal will only make
you repetitive and deduct your score!
▪ As Closing I only need to rebut my closing right?
– No! Rebut all Speakers. Opening too!
Point of Information

▪ Point of Information or PoI is a respond to opponent’s case

while they are explaining their case to get direct answers
– It could be in the form of question or negation
▪ It is recommended to accept and offer at least 2 PoIs per
speakers
▪ PoIs will affect your score tremendously!
– Answer your PoI briefly!
▪ It is suggested to behave in offering PoI
Point of Information FAQs

▪ Who to PoI?
– “My opening sucks! They didn’t explain the fundamental case! Can I
PoI them?”
▪ NO!
– PoI could be addressed to opponent teams. CG could only PoI OO
and CO, vice versa.
▪ I don’t get your PoI!
– “I don’t get my opponent’s PoI, can I skip it?”
▪ NO!
– You can ask your opponent to repeat the PoI again, but you have to
answer it during your speech
