ELEMENTS OF WEATHER

Temperature

Atmospheric
Pressure

Relative
Humidity

Wind Velocity

Forms of
Precipitation
 Temperature is how hot or cold the
atmosphere is, how many degrees it is above
or below freezing.

 THERMOMETER – a device used to measure

temperature
 Atmospheric pressure (or air pressure) is the
weight of air resting on the earth's surface.

 BAROMETER – is used to measure atmospheric

pressure; these are widely used in weather
forecasting; a barometer adapted for
measuring altitude is called an altimeter.
 Motion over the surface of the earth

 The formula for calculating an approximate

value for wind speed is by measuring the rate
at which air pressure changes over a given
distance.
- are winds that blow predominantly from a
single general direction over a particular point
on the Earth's surface.
 The trade winds (also called trades) are the
prevailing pattern of easterly surface winds
found in the tropics near the Earth's equator.
 The westerlies or the prevailing westerlies are
the prevailing winds in the middle
latitudes which blow in areas poleward of
the high pressure area known as the
subtropical ridge in the horse latitudes.
o The polar easterlies (also known as Polar
Hadley cells) are the dry, cold prevailing winds
that blow from the high-pressure areas of
the polar highs at the north and South
polestowards the low-pressure areas within the
westerlies at high latitudes.
 are fast flowing, narrow air currents found in
the atmosphere of some planets,
including Earth. The main jet streams are
located near the altitude of the tropopause.
 These are very important in aviation.
 Local winds blow from high to low pressure
regions; these include land and sea breezes,
mountain breezes, and others.
 There are some that occur so often and so
regularly that they have been given special
names.

 ANEMOMETERS – instruments used to
measure wind speeds near the surface of the
earth.
 The most commonly used in the Philippines
is the aerovane. It indicates both the wind
direction and wind speed or simply the
wind velocity in a promote wind indicator
panel.
 Humidity
is the amount of water vapor in the
atmosphere.

 The instrument to measure relative humidity

is called a hygrometer.
 Precipitationis the product of a rapid
condensation process (if this process is slow,
it only causes cloudy skies).
