Introduction

The Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Causeway will be the main causeway
across Kuwait Bay between Kuwait City and the Subiyah area. Its main signature
cable-stayed bridge with its exquisite arch pylon will rise as a land mark in the
middle of the vital navigation route of the Kuwait Bay.

Based on the large scale and state of the art Bridge, Modular Joint Systems
with a variety of movement capacity are designed and provided by Esco RTS
Company.

INSPECTION & ASSESSMENT
INSPECTION PERIOD
I. FIRST INSPECTION:

The first inspection should be briefly carried out after 1 year of


installation as required items following:

(1) Condition of rubber drainage

(2) Condition of sliding surface

(3) Width of movement gap

(4) Status of corrosion protection surface

(5) Condition of deck bridge at joint area

II. GENERAL INSPECTION

The period of inspection should be conducted as following statements:

1. The first time is maximum 5 years after installing

2. Afterward every 2 years at least

3. If there is any damaged occurrence, the inspection shall be intermediately carried


out.

In addition to items (1) to (6), the inspection of MBJS shall be conduct as:

(7) Welding connection status.

(8) Opening and closing capacity

(9) Condition of Sliding bearings, Compressed bearings and Control springs.

ASSESSMENT
I. Rubber Drainage

Considerable crack, tear, brittle and punctuation were occurred by vehicle ,


unexpected weather and other factors.

II. Sliding Surface

Dust, cement slurry and rust spread on the surface of sliding part.

III. Movement gap width

Width of movement gap is shrinkage by heavy equipment and truck

IV. Corrosion protection

It is essential that surface on the top of MBJS and other parts which were
protected by concrete layer shall be frequently inspect to avoid the massive corrosion.
The fissures and other damaged surfaces shall be thoroughly evaluated.

V. Water leakage

Water leakage causes the damage of deck structure, broken concrete, corrosion of
steel, rust and dirt for the components under the Modular Joint.
