AMX Workshop Series

New Site Identification Workshop

www.arieso.com
Workshop Objectives

• Using GEO Maps for identifying best locations

for new sites/ new carriers – “Grid Calculator
Tool”

• Exporting maps to Mapinfo or other formats

ariesoGEO Maps

• New site locations can be based on many

factors:
– Coverage (RSCP)
– Quality (EcIO)
– Traffic
– Users
• Market level ‘thresholds’ should be available to
determine which of each of the above trigger
requirement for new site or new carrier on site

ariesoGEO Maps

• Starting with base maps for coverage, quality, traffic

and users:
– EcIo & RSCP (RF KPIs)

– Traffic MOUs (in Performance KPIs)

– Unique Users

Map Analysis

• Using the 4 maps, each can be viewed for respective

‘threshold’ by modifying color scheme to point out
‘bad’ area:
– Ex: EcIo worst than -12db by changing color scheme

Map Analysis

• Map shows areas with poor EcIo only.

• Power of GEO is combining these maps for complete
assessment

Multiple Map Analysis

• Multiple map layers can be viewed using

raster tool.

Multiple Map Analysis

• Grid calculator allows for setting thresholds to see ‘new map’

of combined values.

• From Home menu – select “Grid Calculator”

• After running all 4 maps, we can do analysis
via the grid calculator to use combination
of thresholds

Multiple Map Analysis

• Using the Grid Calculator

– Step 1:Area mask: select area to use:
for current analysis area drag the map
area into the “Area Mask” box:

This confines the analysis area and improves

speed of results

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 1
• Step 1: Dragging box on lower left into Grid “Area Mask” makes the
analysis run for just that map area.

Copyright Arieso 2013 Commercial in Confidence www.arieso.com

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 2

• Step 2: Add the layers to be analyzed

to the “Source Grids” window.
• Drag analyses from map to window –
moving over each one

Copyright Arieso 2013 Commercial in Confidence www.arieso.com

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 2

• Drag each map over – for this exercise you will have
the following 4 maps:
– Next step is figuring
out ‘thresholds’ for
each.
– Note: if you need to
remove a map from
the window, click on the
map and then the “X”

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 3

• Step 3: With the 4 maps we can set up

combined thresholds for a ‘new’ map
– Lets start with the following:
• RSCP < -95 dBm
• EcIo < -12dB
– For traffic, users – this is very area/ time period
dependent. We will do those in next iteration.

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 3

• Click on RSCP_Average map from

Source Grids window and drag into
“Expression window” – use key pad
to select < -95 (and add () around
each element.

• Use key pad for “AND” function

• Click on EcIo_Average, use <-12

• Final expression should be:
(RSCP_Average <-95) AND (EcIO_Average <-12)

This provides an expression for where

EcIo < -12 and the RSCP is < -95.

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 4

• Step 4: Name and run the

map
– Select a name for the map.
Use a name that reminds
you of the thresholds used:
“RSCP95_ECIO12” and
enter name in “Output
Grid” window.
– Click “Go” when done

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 5

• Step 5: move our new map

to the canvas and setup a
color scheme
– The new map will show up in
the “Output Grid” window”
– Drag this to the map canvas
by clicking on map and dragging
over.

Note: if there are errors they will show up in the “Expression Output” window.
Typical errors are too large an area (memory error) so be sure to use map bounds
as specified in Step 1.

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 5

• Map is on canvas
• Close Grid Calculator
window (keeps settings)
• Color scheme needs
editing to be ‘yes/no’
type of scheme
– 0 = does not meet both
criteria
– 1 = does meet both
criteria

Copyright Arieso 2013 Commercial in Confidence www.arieso.com

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 5

• Color scheme for Yes/No can be any colors. Example:

– “No” = Orange (range 0 – 1)
– “Yes” = Green (range >1 so use 1-2)
• Apply color scheme to map
• Look for areas of ‘Yes’
(Green)
• These are areas that meet
the criteria

Copyright Arieso 2013 Commercial in Confidence www.arieso.com

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 6

• Adding more criteria.

– Previous example showed area with green dots,
lets look at that area (change transparency) –
looks to be a park or other area with no roads
– Adding more criteria
we can rule out areas
where there are no users

Copyright Arieso 2013 Commercial in Confidence www.arieso.com

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 6

Now let us add MOUs and User Counts to criteria…

• First find good values to trigger on by picking top
ranges from each map
– Example:
Traffic MOU > 1700 Unique Users > 2000

Copyright Arieso 2013 Commercial in Confidence www.arieso.com

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 6

• Re-run Grid analysis (will have saved last settings) with changed
criteria (for example)
– RSCP <-80dBm
– EcIo < -9dB
– Traffic MOU >1700
– Users > 2000

Copyright Arieso 2013 Commercial in Confidence www.arieso.com

Multiple Map Analysis: Step 6

• Apply same yes/no color scheme

• Map shows bins that meet criteria in Green

• You can play with criteria to locate best areas for new sites!

Exporting Maps

• Any maps created in ariesoGEO can be exported for viewing

in Mapinfo or other tools.
• Right click on map,
select type of export.

Exporting Maps

• Select type (Mapinfo, Bil Grid)

• Select file name/ folder and click “start export”

Questions from previous workshop

• How are Footprint Ec/Io (Average) and Footprint Rscp (Average) analyses
calculated?
Just the measured values for that cell in the bin

• What’s the difference between Pilot Pollution Map and Pilot Pollution NdB?
The only difference is that Pilot Pollution NdB contains a mandatory filter for
ARFCN. On the Pilot Pollution Map this filter is optional. You may also change the
Parameter ( ) to define the threshold for Pilot Pollution consideration (how many
dBs from Best Server?)
Pilot Pollution should always run on single ARFCN mode in order to analyze Pilot
Pollution per carrier.

• What are the Footprint RSCP Tuned and Footprint EC/Io Tuned plots?
They show how the footprint of a cell would look like after physical optimizations
simulated on GEO, such as tilt, azimuth, power and Turn Cell OFF changes.
