QUESTION
 WHAT IS OIL ?
 HOW AN OIL IS FORMED ?
OIL PROPERTIES
The calculation of reserves in an oil reservoir or the
determination of its performance requires knowledge of
the fluid’s physical properties at elevated pressure and
temperature. Of primary importance are bubblepoint
pressure, solution gas-oil ratio (GOR), and formation
volume factor (FVF). In addition, viscosity and interfacial
or surface tension must be determined for calculations
involving the flow of oil through pipe or porous media.
BUBBLE POINT PRESSURE
In their original condition, reservoir oils include some
natural gas in solution. The pressure at which this natural
gas begins to come out of solution and form bubbles is
known as the bubblepoint pressure.
SOLUTION GAS RATIO
 Depend on pressure, temperature and the composition
of the gas and the crude oil.

 Crude oil said to be saturated with gas at any pressure

and temperatur if on slight reduction in pressure some
gas is released from solution

 Said to be undersaturated if no gas is released from

solution

 So undersaturated if only liquid in reservoir, and

saturated if any gas in reservoir
SOLUTION GAS RATIO
CONT’D
 Expressed in term of the increase in solution gas per
unit increase in pressure (SCF/STB/PSI)

 Gas solubility under isothermal condition is generally

expressed in terms of increase in solution gas per unit
of oil per unit increase in pressure

 Generally knew as Rso

Formation Volume Factor, Bo
 Defined as the volume in barrels that one stock tank
barrel occupies in the formation at reservoir
temperature and pressure and with the solution gas
which can be held in the oil

Density And Specific Gravity
 Density is defined generally a the ratio of mass to it’s
volume

 Spesific Gravity is defined as ratio of oil density to

water density

 In oil, density commonly expressed as API degree

141.5
 γ𝑜 = 131.5+𝐴𝑃𝐼
Viscosity
 Defined as resistance of fluid to flow
 Decreases above bubble point, increases below bubble
point
