Don Francisco Mercado

• Don Francisco Mercado or Francisco


Engracio Rizal Mercado was Jose‘s father
• He was born on May 11, 1818
• Francisco took Latin and Philosophy
in College of San Jose Manila
• A farmer from Biñan, Laguna
• He became a teniente gobernadorcillo
(lieutenant governor) and thus nicknamed Teniente Kiko

• Doña Teodora Alonso or Doña Teodora
Alonso Quintos Realonda "lolay"
• Was born on November 8, 1826 in
Sta. Cruz, Manila
• She was educated at Santa Rosa College
• Possessing a refined culture and literary talents, she influenced her
children to love the arts, literature and music.
• Claveria Decree of 1849
• It is believed that Teodora's family descended from Lankandula, the
last native king of tondo

• Was the 4th child in the family and
Rizal loved to tease her

Rizal instead of Mercado because the name Rizal means persecution!
