Extensive reading involves learners reading texts for enjoyment and

HOW MUCH MATERIAL SHOULD
STUDENTS READ?

Extensive reading means reading a large amount in the second

language. At the same time, there is no particular amount of
reading that qualifies for the term extensive.

How much students read is relative to their circumstances and

abilities.

read as much as is
reasonably
possible.

The major consideration is how much class

and homework time the students have for
reading. Are reading classes once a week or
daily ? How much time can students reasonably
be expected to devote to homework reading per
day or per week ? How long students can read
pleasurably before losing interest.

Beginners obviously cannot read

for as long as more advanced
learners. It is not only that they
read more slowly, they get tired
more quickly.
How can teacher
Evaluate
Students ?

One way of evaluating students is in terms of the

reading targets, as discussed in the preceding
section. Specifically, credit can be given for books
read and reports turned in. A standard way of doing
this is to assign the reading of certain number of
book or pages (for example a book of week) in order
for students to pass the class or to receive a certain
grade.

At What Level of
Difficulty Should
Students Read ?

Reading in the second language

directly without translation and
without struggle will likely be a
new experience.

Students should realize that is

better to read more material that
is easier than less material that is
harder, and that it is better to
enjoy what one reads than to be
bored or uninterested.
CONCLUSION

Having considered the five

curricular question listed at the
beginning of this material, teacher
and administrators can begin to
draw a mental blueprint for
extensive reading in their own class
and institution. The next step is to
survey the spectrum of materials
that might be used in extensive
reading. This is a fundamental issue
since, in order for students to read
extensively, the right materials
must be obtained and made readily
available.
