What is Congenital Heart disease?
Congenital heart disease is a term that refers to any abnormality of the heart that occurs due to variations in
the development of the child’s heart in utero. 5-8 children in 1000 are born with Congenital heart disease.
Commonly a doctor identifies abnormal heart sounds in a child and refers the case to a specialist. The
Department of Pediatric cardiac services receives the child and evaluates the condition. The person who
examines and evaluates the child is a specialist known as a pediatric cardiologist. If the child needs surgical
management, which is 50 % of these cases, it is followed by further diagnostic tests like X-ray Chest, ECG, ECHO
and if necessary, cardiac catheterization to determine the abnormalities in the child’s heart. With high-quality
imaging, it is possible to nowadays to diagnose many conditions even before a child is born and refer it to our
department for re-evaluation soon after birth.
Once a plan has been made, Medical or surgical or a combined approach is taken to give good quality life on
the long term to the child.
Causes of pediatric congenital heart disease:
Though many factors have been implicated for CHD, it is very difficult in most cases to pinpoint the absolute
etiology. The causes of congenital heart disease can be due to a chromosomal abnormality, consumption of
drugs or alcohol by the mother or a viral infection for mother during pregnancy.
