MUSCLES
• is a group of muscle
tissues which contract
together to produce a
force Muscle Structure

• consists of fibers of muscle cells surrounded by

protective tissue, bundled together by many
more fibers, all surrounded in a thick protective
tissue
MUSCLES
•are the “engine”
that the body uses to
propel itself Muscle Structure
FACTS ABOUT MUSCLES:
• Muscles make up more than half of total body weight.
• There are more than 600 muscles in the body, which varies
from around 640 to 850.
• Most muscles work in
pairs.
• Muscles give us form and
shape.
• Muscles produce most of
our body heat.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MUSCLES
1. CONTRACTIBILITY
- the ability to shorten actively and
exert a pull or tension that can be
harnessed by connective tissues
- the ability to shorten and
thicken, or contract, when a
sufficient stimulus is received
The biceps muscle contracts to lift the barbell up
CHARACTERISTICS OF MUSCLES
2. EXCITABILITY
- ability to respond to
stimulation; stimuli initiate nerve
impulses which are interpreted
by the brain and spinal cord and
transmitted back to the muscles,
Olympic athletes
causing them to respond at the race finish line
CHARACTERISTICS OF MUSCLES
3. EXTENSIBILITY
- the ability to
stretch and extend

Muscle that extend/flexes during

exercise routine

CHARACTERISTICS OF MUSCLES
4. ELASTICITY
- ability of muscle to return to its
original shape after contraction or
extension

Woman doing a yoga routine

TYPES OF MUSCLES
1. Skeletal Muscle
2. Cardiac Muscle
3. Smooth Muscle
(Visceral
SKELETAL MUSCLE
• Attached to bones
• Mostly found in the arms,
legs, back, chest and face
• VOLUNTARY: people has
control over their action.
• Caused body movement A great illustration highlighting the
different breakdown of a skeletal
muscle

FUNCTIONS OF
SKELETAL MUSCLE
• Produce skeletal movement.
• Maintain posture and body
position.
• Support soft tissues.
• Guard entrances and exits of
material.
• Maintain body temperature.
• Store nutrient reserves.
CARDIAC MUSCLE
• Also known as “heart muscle”
• Form walls of the heart
• Involuntary: function
without conscious thought or control
• Send blood pulsing around the whole body through
contraction
• Cells are fused: when one contracts, they all contract

SMOOTH MUSCLE
• Found in the internal organs of
the body such as the digestive
system, respiratory system,
blood vessels and the eyes.
• Contract to cause movement in
these systems.
• Involuntary: function without
conscious thought or control

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MUSCLES
• The stapedius, found
in the inner ear, is the
smallest skeletal
muscle in the human
body.
• Approximately 1mm in
length
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MUSCLES
• The strongest muscle in
the body is the
masseter, located on
each side of your mouth
• These muscles help you
bite down with 150
pounds of force.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MUSCLES

• The Gluteus Maximus in

the buttock is the biggest
muscle in the body.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MUSCLES
• The sartorius muscle is the
longest muscle in the human
body.
• Also called the “tailor’s muscle”
• It is a long, thin, superficial
muscle that runs down the length
of the thigh in the anterior
compartment.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MUSCLES
• The hardest working
muscle is the heart.
• Everyday the heart
pumps at least 2,500
gallons of blood.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MUSCLES

• It takes 17
muscles to smile
and 43 muscles
to frown.
SO IT’S BETTER TO SMILE THAN
TO FROWN.
