 What are Active and Passive voice?

• Active and passive voice refers to whether the

subject or the object in the sentence performs the
action of the verb
• In active voice the subject performs the action of the
verb
• In passive voice the object performs the action of the
verb
 Active Voice

• The subject performs the action of the verb

S (doer) + v + o (receiver)
Example:

The student presented the talk.

 The article summarized the research

 These examples show that subject is doing the verb’s action

o the dog jumped onto the boy.
o The dog (subject) is doing the jumping (verb)

o The computer ate my paper.

o The computer (subject) is doing the eating (verb)

Subject + be + past principle + (by agent)

*by agent : ( pelaku yang sebenarnya )

The talk was presented by the student

• Example:
The research was summarized by the article

 These example show the subject being acted upon by the
verb .
o The boy was jumped on by the dog.
o Boy (subject) was being jumped on (verb)

o My paper was eaten by the computer,

o Paper (subject) was being eaten (verb)
 Reasons to use the active voice

• Most writes prefer to use active voice

because it is more direct.

o Active : the waiter dropped the tray
of food
o Passive : the tray of food was
dropped by the waiter.
 Reasons to use the active voice

• The active voice is less awkward and clearly

states relationship between subject and
action
• Compare
o Passive : your request for funding has been
denied by the review committee.
o Active : the review committee denied your
request for funding.
• The active voice sentence pattern propels
the reader forward through your writing
this avoiding weak prose.
