Magnetic Particle Test (MT)

PRINCIPLE
Uses electrical current or permanent magnet to create a magnetic
field in a specimen, and flux leakage occurred at discontinuity.
Magnetic particles cumulate on flux leakage and indicate the
discontinuity.

APPLICATIONS
Used on metal which can be magnetised (Ferromagnetic) to
detect surface or sub-surface discontinuities. Simple to use and
portable for field testing.

LIMITATIONS
Cannot be used on metals, which cannot be
magnetised.
Magnetic Particle Test (MT)
• Magnetic particle Inspection:
• 1. Used for detecting surface & subsurface defects
• 2. Use of AC is limited due to skin effect
• 3. Use of HWDC allows subsurface discontinuities to be
studied effectively.
1.Fluorescent particles – UV light combinations can
be used (or)
2. Non fluorescent particles – white light can be used.
3. Mode of application can be wet or dry.
4. Intensity of magnetic field can be assessed with
Quantitative quality indicator (QQI) or Pie gage
5. Welded component shall be demagnetized after tes
