Music plays a HUGE part in Breakdancing. The ‘Break’ part of Breakdancing

actually comes from the term ‘Breakbeat’ which refers to a simple beat
looped over.
There are many types of music utilised in breakdancing which are often
mixed together by a DJ. These are some good examples of this music genre
fusion.

Practice your moves over and over and over and over……..
Practice makes perfect!!
Because Breakdancing is a physical sport you might need to take a break
every now and then when you are tired.
This is a good time to rehydrate and maybe even practice your steps in
slow motion to get them right.

Break Dancing moves are inspired by a variety of influences such as dance, acrobatics,

There are many different kinds of moves in Break Dancing. These are the basic
categories in order of difficulty from easiest to hardest. - Click one -

Footwork involves fancy moves with, you guessed it, your feet.
You can showcase these moves at the start of your routine while standing up or
further into your routine whilst on the ground.
The type of footwork is usually identified by the number of times your feet touch
the ground. For example, a 2-step involves your feet touching the ground twice.

Things to remember!
-Overdo it (Make sure all your limbs are moving at all times, even
if they don’t need to)

- Use your hands (Use your hands to stabilise yourself as you

swing your legs all around)

- Be concise (Use footwork as a transition into something else,

don’t spend too much time on it)

Try a 6-step (Downrock) when you think you are ready.

Waves are always good and should look like something’s not quite right with
your skeleton.
You can do a standing wave where you use mostly your arms and your
upper body to portray a ‘pulse’ moving within you. The trick is to isolate your
movements i.e. only do one at a time. Check THIS for an Arm Wave tutorial

The other option is to do a whole body wave where it appears your body is
rubber and you are flolloping about on the floor.
This includes tricks such as the Caterpillar and the Worm.

Freezes are when your body is stationary in the air for a brief period of time.
They require a lot of strength in both your arms and your core (stomach and
back).
This is because you are at the hands of gravity and the HEAVIEST part of
your body is usually the highest in the air!
The trick with Freezes is to use your elbows as support for the rest of your
body…..

As

There are 2 types of freezes; ground freezes (low, bent elbows) and air
freezes (high, straightened elbows). Check THIS for a simple ground
freeze move.

Spinning is basicly the act of rotating about an axis using your arms. The more
axes you rotate through, the more difficult the spin is. So basically, if you are
spinning in all different directions, you are one hell of a breakdancer!!!

You can do basic spins like a Backspin by using your arms

to rotate your body around whilst crunched in a ball on your
back.

Other Spin tricks (eg Flares, Windmills) require you to keep your legs
straight and spin around without your feet touching the floor.
Go HERE for a great Windmill Tutorial.

The trick with Spins is maintaining momentum and a low centre of gravity. The
lower your centre of gravity, the easier it is to balance. Use your legs to keep
your momentum going.

Flips are one of the hardest tricks to master correctly and involve your legs going
over your head in one way or another.
Flips can be done in the air (Front Flip, Backflip) or by keeping in contact with the
ground using your hands (Suicide, Back Handspring).

With handsprings, jump over and back and once your hands
are planted, pull your legs over with your core muscles.
Added fanciness is achieved by running in the air and
moving legs about.

When flipping, focus initially on jumping up then

spinning. It is important to get as high as you can
then spin as fast as you can. Tucking the legs helps
until you have it down pat.
