Role of RBI
1. Issue of Notes

 Monopoly to issue notes

 Acts as agent

 Minimum Reserve System


2. Banker to Government
 Banker, Agent and Advisor

 Carries all functions to government, similar to


commercial banks provide to customers

 Does not pay interest on government accounts


3. Bankers’ Bank & Lender of the Last
Resort
 All banks have accounts in RBI

 Extensive powers over all scheduled,


commercial and cooperative banks

 CRR & SLR criteria

 Lender to banks at the times of financial crisis


4. Controller of credit
 Powers to influence credit volumes

 Change bank lending rates

 Disallow certain persons from borrowing

 Objectives of credit control


5. Custodian of foreign reserves
 Maintain balance between demand and
supply of foreign currency

 Authorized to trade foreign currency


6. Other functions

 Clearing House functions

 Agriculture credit

 Regulates and monitors money flow to avoid


inflation or deflation situation
