This project consists of the mayans different economic
activities that they did to satisfy their needs and build their civilization. This project also consists of visual aids showing the ways of life of the mayans in terms of their economic activities . THE MAYAN ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES TRADE Trading was a very important economic activity in the Mayan civilization. Cities such as Tikal and Topan where major trading hubs in the civilization. Besides the trade route on land , important maritime trade took place as well. The Mayans traded goods with each other and with other groups such as the Tainos and the Quechua. THE MAYANS ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES TRADE The items that where traded includes salt, obsidian , foodstuff , clothing and tools which where subsistent items. Luxury items which where traded included jade ,gold , ceremics , jewelry and feather works. Trading boosted boosted the economy and allowed the Mayan people to develope into the most advanced civilization of their time. THE MAYANS ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES AGRICULTURE The Mayans’ economy depended heavily on agriculture as the main means of acquiring food and expand their culture. They practised different farming techniques to keep the land soil as fertile as possible. One of these techniques is slash and burn . In this process they cleared the forest and burnt the cut trees so they where able to further ensure the fertility of the newly cleared lands for the longest period of time possible. THE MAYAN ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES AGRICULTURE After these lands where cleared , the Mayans continued to cultivate crops such as corn , maize , tomatoes , beans , chili peppers , papayas , bananas , guava , tobacco and pumpkin. These crops where planted and reaped with different tools such as hoes and grinding tools. THE MAYAN ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES HUNTING hunting was also an important economic activity . In hunting , the Mayans uses various weapons to kill their preys are bows , daggers and knives. With these weapons they hunted animals such as rabbits , fishes , ducks , quails , tapir , howler monkeys and spider monkeys just to name a few.
