Water logging in Tehsil Sadiqabad of District Rahimyar Khan

Waterlogging - Causes
Broadly reasons for water logging are:
1. Sandy soils of the area
2. Sowing of sugarcane, a high delta crop
3. Excessive Dewatering in upper part, increased in level of
evaporation pond (No monitoring of Tubewells operation)
4. Exceptionally high flood of 2010 followed with heavy
rainfalls in August 2011
5. Energy Crisis (Low Voltage)
6. Low Lying Area
7. Adjacent to Evaporation Ponds
8. Water Level of Evaporation Ponds
41
Water logging in Hakra Branch Canal Command

Waterlogging – Causes
• Sandy soils
• Unlined Hakra Branch (Cut /Fill Section)
• Low Lying Area
• Seepage from across the Border
• Field Irrigation

42
Water logging in Abbasia and Punjnad Canal Commands

Waterlogging – Causes
• Seepage from Abbasia Link Canal

• Low Lying Area

• Cut/Fill Section of Abbasia Link Canal
• Changed Cropping Pattern (Sugarcane)
• 3R Drain not Functional
• Soil Strata

Assessment of Water Logging along Abbasia Link Canal
using Visual Mod Flow

Model is developed with two options

 Option - I : 3-R drainage system in working Condition

• Model results indicate that 3-R main drain lowers the water table
in the adjacent areas of the drain upto 2m.
• Effect of the drain reduces gradually away from the drain and
become 0 after 200 – 300ft.

 Option – II : 3 Parallel drains along Abbasia Link Canal with

three additional drains
• Seepage from canals will be intercepted by parallel drains
• 50 to 60% of the total water logged area will get relief and the
root zone will be cleared upto 5-6ft after 10 to 12 months.
