Overview
Determine if procedure and qualification records are in
compliance with applicable ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel
Code and any additional requirements of API570.
The weld procedure review will include:
◦ One Weld Procedure Specification (WPS); and
◦ One Procedure Qualification Record (PQR).
a) Determine if all required essential and nonessential
variables have been properly addressed. (Supplemental
essential variables will not be a part of the WPS/PQR)
b) Determine that the number and type of mechanical tests
that are listed on PQR are the proper tests, and whether the
results are acceptable.
WELD PROCEDURE REVIEW MAY INCLUDE SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, OR
SAW, WITH THE FOLLOWINGLIMITATIONS:
◦ a) No more than one process will be included on a single WPS or PQR and the WPS to
be reviewed will be supported by a single PQR.
◦ b) Filler metals will be limited to one per processfor SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, or SAW
◦ c) The PQR will be the supporting PQR for the WPS.
◦ d) Base metals will be limited to P1, P3, P4, P5, and P8.
◦ e) Dissimilar base metal joints, and dissimilar thicknesses of base metals will be
excluded.
◦ f) Special weld processes such as corrosion resistant weld metal overlay, hardfacing
overlay, and dissimilar metal welds with buttering of ferritic member will be excluded.
◦ g) For P1, P3, P4, and P5, for the purpose of the examination the lower transition
temperature will be 1330F and the upper transformation temperature will be 1600F.
Mechanical tests used in procedure or performance
qualification are as follows:
QW-321 Retests
QW 402
Joints .4 Deletion of Backing
QW 403
Base Metals .16 Change Pipe Diameter
.18 Change in P Number
QW 404
Filler Metals .15 Change in F Number
.30 Change in weld t deposited
QW 405
Positions .1 Addition of a position
.3 Change from vertical Up to Down
or Down to UP progression
The next inline is a change in Pipe Diameter
qualified. As pipe diameters become smaller
the difficulty for a welder is increased
resulting in a higher skill level requirement.
So this translates to a change in diameter to
one smaller than qualified by the welder’s
pipe coupon on a previous test with this
process.
.
P-Numbers. P-Numbers serve to group
metals by mechanical and chemical
properties. So it is reasonable to think that
not all metals can be welded using the same
technique, or have the same level of
difficulty for welders.
There are three basic P-No. groupings for
welder qualifications. If a welder changes to
a P-No. group that he/she has not qualified
for then a retest is required. We will have a
more thorough lesson on Alternate Base
Metals later in this course.
