3. The student will be able to explain how they found their answer to a
problem.
State Standards:
The student will…
1. 2.NSBT.5 Add and subtract fluently through 99 using knowledge
of place value and properties of operations.
2. 2.NSBT.7 Add and subtract through 999 using concrete models,
drawings, and symbols which convey strategies connected to
place value understanding.
Methods we will be learning and using:
In this section, we will use methods to model addition and subtraction-
• Chip model
• Number line model
chip model-addition:
By working with this model, we will see why the laws for signed
numbers (positive and negative) work the way they do.
We will use black and red circles to represent + and –
we can represent +2 in a few ways…

Which chip model correctly demonstrates -1+6?
Click A, B, C, or D?
KEY: B D

KEY: -2+4=?
A B C D
Hint: always move to
the left on the number
Addition using number line: line when doing
addition!!
For this method, we will be using a number line to figure out our
answer. Always make sure to start at 0. From zero, go to the first
number given in your equation. After that, add however many it says to
add.
Here is an example that demonstrates what to do:
Equation: 2+2=?
+2 +2
Now we see 2+3=4

Chip model-subtraction:
The chip model for subtraction is ultimately the same as the addition
model. The same method is used with two different colored circles; one
representing + and one representing -

subtracting, make sure
Subtraction Using number line: to move to the left!
For subtraction on the number line, we will use the same technique as
when adding. Always start at 0. The only thing is that after adding our
first number to zero, we will want to move to the LEFT to take away, or
subtract NOT RIGHT!
Below is an example equation:
Demonstrate 5-2=?
-2 Now we see 5-2 is equal to 3!
