LEARNING STYLES:

PERCEPTIONS MODALITIES
Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, and more.
What’s your preferred style of learning?
◦ Learning styles: diverse ways of
learning, comprehending, and using
information.

◦ The most common learning styles

are derived from the 3 main sensory
receivers identified as Visual,
Auditory, and Kinesthetic/Tactile
learning.

◦ However, according to the modality

theory 1-2 of these styles is normally
dominant. (This theory is also known
as VAK Learning: Visual, Auditory,
and Kinesthetic)
V.A.K. Learning Style
◦ Also known as VAKT (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, & Tactile).

◦ It is based on modalities - channels by which human expression can

take place and is composed of a combination of perception and
memory. Learners use all three modalities to receive and learn new
information and experiences.

◦ This style is being presented more and more for it’s effectiveness. It
requires the students to participate and demonstrate.

◦ It has an advantage over the traditional approach, rote memorization,

or in other words copy information and learning nothing.
Memorization or Regurgitation?
◦ Notice the retention rate for
reading…
◦ Several students are forced to
self teach by reading and
studying the material from
textbook assignments.
◦ At this rate, nothing is actually
being learned, just being
crammed in and temporarily
memorized for tests.
◦ This is called cognitive overload.
Alternative forms of education
:Multiple intelligence theory
◦ Gardener’s Multiple intelligence theory revolves around alternate
forms of human capability.
◦ The theory consists of naturalist, musical, logical mathematical,
interpersonal, bodily kinesthetic, linguistic, intrapersonal, and
spatial.
◦ Research continues to be conducted for the expanding list.
◦ What is considered intelligent differs in many cultures.
Five Minds For the Future
◦ Gardener is suggesting new directions for schools in his new book
the Five Minds.
1. The Ethical Mind: Teaching students to think reflectively on their behavior and
think of ways to advance society rather than their wealth.
2. The respectful Mind: Honoring people with different ideas, cultures, and belief
systems allows the mind to expand.
3. The Disciplined Mind: The most common in today’s school curriculum;
becoming a master in literature, history, science, or art.
4. The Synthesizing Mind: The ability to sort through information, and determine
what is meaningful and not so useful.
5. The Creating Mind: Different ways of viewing the world, offers new insights
and fresh ways of thinking. Not necessarily artistic

Recap
◦ of the several styles of learning there is
definitely a preferred type. The theory is that
it’s is essential for students to evaluate and
apply each modality for an overall
understanding of the material. Visualizing,
listening, and preforming is the key to
acquiring knowledge in a diverse
environment.
