Sedimentation Activity

Abesamis, Mariane Fe ; Bongabong, Jemadel ; Gildo, John

Lloyd ; Nacario, Sarah May ; Ornopia, Shaina
Rationale
The importance of this lab activity is to be able to determine the
hydraulic residence time of the sediment of our choice in a suspension
relative to its depth. This also gives us an idea on treating particulate
matters by means of separating unstable and destabilized suspended
solids from a water phase or suspension. Its application dominates on
water and wastewater treatments including settling of coagulated and
flocculated waters prior to filtration, grit removal, biological floc
removal in activated sludge and others.
Methods
• Materials : Graduated tower, Soil,
Stopwatch, Water
• Sieve the sand sample (Ideal size: A
mesh#270)
B Height
• Mix 0.2m3 of sand per 1m3 solution
• Record the length of the interface from the E
clear zone to the B zone per 5 minutes S
interval
• Plot the variation of height with time Experimental Set up
