INTRODUCTION
Infrastructure development across the world created demand for
construction materials

 Concrete is the premier civil engineering construction material.

Concrete manufacturing involves consumption of ingredients i.e.

cement, aggregates, water and admixtures.

Among all the ingredients, aggregates form the major part. i.e.
60% to 75%.[1]

INTRODUCTION
Use of natural aggregate in such a rate leads to a question about
the preservation of natural aggregates sources.

In light of this, in the contemporary civil engineering

construction, using alternative materials in place of natural
aggregate in concrete production makes concrete as sustainable and
environmentally friendly construction material.[2]

In heavy constructions like bridges and high rise buildings there is
immense need of light weight concrete to decrease self weight of
concrete.

INTRODUCTION
Materials used as a Replacement of Coarse Aggregates

Coconut Shells
Plastic (High-density polyethylene)
Glasscrete (Concrete with glass aggregate)
Crushed rubber
Papercrete( Paper Pulp is used)[4]

In this research we are concerned about Coconut Shells as a

replacement of coarse aggregates.

INTRODUCTION
Production of Coconut Tress in Pakistan
 Mainly Occurs in Sindh and Baluchistan
 In Sindh it occurs in Thatta, Badin, Karachi, Hyderabad,
Mirpurkhas and Sanghar.[3]
 In Baluchistan it occurs in Hub, Sonmiani, vender, Pisni
and Gwadar
 In 1982 Coconut Tress were spread on an area 95 acres
and now it is spreaded on an area of 272 acres which shows
the increasing growth of coconut trees in Pakistan.[4]

INTRODUCTION
Properties of Coconut Shells

 Unit Weight of the shells is 1738kg/m3.

 Water Absorption is 6.17-8 %.[5]

 Specific gravity is 1.74

 Abrasion Resistance is 98.6 %[6]

PROBLEM STATEMENT
 The use of concrete in Pakistan is increasing day by day due to which
the sources of the aggregates are reducing.
 Also the valuable shells of coconut is wasted causing financial loss as
well as environmental pollution.
 In modern concrete industry light weight concrete has a very
important role ,which can be achieved through use of coconut shells.

AIM & OBJECTIVES

 To study the effect of coconut shells on the property of concrete
(Compressive strength).
 To determine the optimum replacement level of Coconut shells in
concrete.
 To achieve a concrete with low unit weight .i.e. light weight
concrete.

Methodology
The research methodology of the project includes the following steps:
a)Collection of sample (Coconut shells)
b)Laboratory tests.
The following tests will be conducted on Concrete during the research.
 For Fresh Properties
 Workability test by slump cone apparatus
 For Hard Properties
 Compressive Strength Test

Scope of study
 In this research we will use coconut shells as a replacement of
Coarse Aggregates in different percentages and will check their
compressive and tensile strength.

 The use of Coconut Shells will be cost effective as it is cheaply

available.

 It will also help in development of light weight concrete.
