A form of internalized oppression, characterized by a perception of
ethnic or cultural inferiority
It involves an automatic and unreasonable rejection of anything
Filipino and an instinctive and uncritical preference for anything
Western or foreign
Its scope is not limited to patronage of
foreign products but also involves the
choice of language, concept of beauty,
educational systems, laws and policies,
and even political systems
Filipinos have a colonial mentality which is made
up of two dimensions: the first is lack of
patriotism or an active awareness,
appreciation, and love of the Philippines; the
second is an actual preference for foreign
things.
Filipino culture is characterized by an openness to
the out-put side - adapting and incorporating the
foreign elements into our image of ourselves. And
yet this image is not built around a deep core of the
Philippines history and language.
The result is cultural vagueness or weakness
that makes Filipinos extraordinary susceptible
to the wholesale acceptance of moderns mass
culture which often western. Thus, there is
preference for foreign fashion, entertainment,
lifestyle, technology, consumer items.
Filipinos have this distinction between the “ethnic
majority” and the “ethnic minority”, which is also
the result of the our country’s colonial past. The
Filipinos who were assimilated by Spain and other
western countries became the “ethnic majority”.
While those who continued the practices of their
ancestors were labeled as the “minorities” and
“indigenous people”. And it’s saddening that a lot of
Filipinos perceive minorities as uneducated,
barbaric and ancient.

Filipinos have associated foreign countries with “greener
pastures”, so they choose to leave the country either to work
abroad or permanently migrate
DECOLONIZATION
This refers to the task of unlearning colonial mentality
Its objective is to retell the narrative of the oppressive
colonial experience throughout Philippine society for the
purpose of exposing its oppressive intent

STRICT IMPLEMENTION OF PRINCPLES THAT
PROTECT THE PHILIPPINE PROVISIONS
• The government plays a significant role in this advocacy
• “Filipino First” should be practiced
REEXAMINING OF PHILIPPINE VALUES
• Filipinos must embrace their traits and take pride in them.
• Patronizing Western products and trying to look like a
westerner will never make a Filipino become one
• Most importantly, nationalism – the attitude that the
members of a nation have when they care about their
national identity and their actions when seeking to achieve
and sustain national unity and independence
