The Global Role of American Labor

Jem, Cat, Simon & Sean

The Impact of the Global
Economy on America
Dying Industries:

1. Appliance repair
2. DVD, game, and video rental
3. Money market and other banking
4. Recordable media manufacturing
5. Hardware manufacturing
6. Shoe and footwear manufacturing
7. Costume and team uniform manufacturing
8. Women’s and girls’ apparel manufacturing
The Global Role of
America is Shifting.
● Our economy is becoming less dependant on
manufacturing and more dependant on service
and refined products.

● Pharmaceuticals, industrial machines, and

aircraft parts are some of America's biggest
exports.
These manufacturing
jobs aren't disappearing
These jobs are moving to other countries because of
Outsourcing:
Effects of Outsourcing
● Outsourcing gives developing countries a chance

● Outsourcing leads to growth in the foreign economy

because of the influx of new money.

● Life changing for the foreign workers receiving jobs. In

fact, they can be the defining factor between a life of
borderline poverty or one of relative prosperity.
The Service
Industry
Service industry companies are involved in retail,
transport, distribution, food services, as well as other
service-dominated businesses
Service in the U.S.
● Moved away from a manufacturing economy

● In 1990 manufacturing employed more workers than any other industry in 36 states

● Today manufacturing is only dominant in 7 states

● Manufacturing jobs have decreased from 18 million in 1990 to 12 million jobs today, most of
this though is due to automation of factories

● While the health care and social service industries have nearly doubled in size from 9.1
million to over 18 million jobs, accounting for almost 80% of jobs

● jobs include, transportation, communication, utilities, wholesale and retail trade, finance,
insurance and real estate

What if the US became a
“Isolationist Country” and did not
Participate in the Global Economy?

“Complete Economic Collapse”

“Military Chaos & Trade Depression”
Implications for the
Global Economy:
● Less Trust, More Conflict
● Death of US Manufacturing, Change of the System
● Loss of High-Paying/Economically Important Jobs
● Necessitate a Rewrite of how the US does Business and Makes Money
● Textiles & “Cheap to Make Things” Would Disappear
● US Would Acquire $2 trillion to $5 trillion in debt
● Conversion to non-Petrol Electricity (Coal, Nuclear, Renewable Energy)
● Worldwide Suffering
