CONTINGENCY MODEL

• It is a class of behavioural theory which claims that there is no best


way to organize a corporation,to lead a company or to take decisions.

• The optimal course of action is dependent upon external or internal


factors.

• Success depends upon several valiables, including leadership


style,qualities of the followers and aspects of situations.
LEADER-MEMBER RELATIONSHIP

 It is the most critical variable in determining the


situation’s favourableness.

 Consist of the group atmosphere and the degree of


confidence,loyalty,respect and attraction that
followers fell for their leaders.
TASK-STRUCTURE

 It is the second most important input into the


favourableness of the situation.

 Tasks that are completely structured tend to give


more control to the leaders whereas vague and
unclear tasks lessen’s the leaders control and
influence.
LEADER’S POSITION POWER

 It is obtained through formal authority , which is the


third most critical dimension of the situation.

 The amount of authority the leader has to reward or


punish followers.

 Influence derived from one’s formal position in the


organisation which includes power to hire,
fire,discipline,promote and give salary hike.
CRITICISMS OF MODEL

 Lack of flexiblity.

 Can only be implemented on small groups.

 No defined goal.

 It suggests that leaders should placed in situation


that fit their style.
CONCLUSION

 It suggests that there is no one best way of leading


and that a leadership style that is effective in one
situation may not be successful in other situations.

 The model emphasizes the importance of both the


characterstics of a leader and the favourableness of
the situations in which a leader leads.
